Never built by own puzzle. How do I learn the basics?

I'm not planning on designing my own but I want to build a petaminx sometime in the future.

Welcome to the forum. I recommend that before posting such general questions, you browse the forum for a while. I think there are several good threads on this topic in the "Puzzle Building and Modding" forum.
