Hello, This may be my first real "Building" post but I hope its not my last. This puzzle got its start here: http://twistypuzzles.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=17890Tanner aka Steryne has been helping me via Skype to turn my POV-Ray code into something that could be printed. Here is what we have now... We have a few design issues to address obviously but I think they are all fixable. The mech used to keep the face centers from rotating was the most original part of this design and where I expected there to be the biggest problems. However that doesn't appear to be the case. The two biggest issues at the moment appear to be: (1) The neck that holds the face centers and edges to their feet is too big. As a result when they are in the face center position they easily fall out of the puzzle as the corners don't overlap their feet enough. The solution is to make this neck smaller (and we have plenty of room to do that) and then make the wings off the corners bigger so they overlap more of the feet of these pieces when they are in the face center position. (2) I think we went too far with the tolerances (gap between pieces) especially with regards to the small circle pieces. They are far too loose but with the right tolerances and fillets I think this can be improved greatly. All comments, suggestions, tips, etc. are more then welcome. Enjoy, Carl

Incredible! That's one more of your ideas that has become a reality!

Very nice. I can't wait to see it finished. I've been wanting to see this puzzle in reality for a while now, and now I just hope you can fix the issues with it.

Great to see that you got POV-Ray code -> reality. Can't wait to see a video of 2.0 soon. wwwmwww wrote: This may be my first real "Building" post but I hope its not my last. I hope so too.

Hello everybody and happy new years! I have a new pdf for all cadders who can offer advice. The edge length is 57mm, please offer any advice. Attachment:

Hey,
I only skimmed over the PDF. I was wondering, is this the exact design you printed, or is this with the changes to hopefully fix the problems?
Also, what tolerances did you use? (As far as the neck being too thick, that sounds like a very easy issue to fix.)

This is unedited. This is what was printed. It isn't so much as the neck being thick as the corners not having enough to hole onto. I tried to give everything .2mm between the next part.

RubixFreakGreg wrote: Put 0 tolerances on EVERYTHING, just my advice (see mini split) Works OK for mini puzzles but I wouldn't recommended it for anything else. Tanner, tolerances are a little tricky. I'm afraid that just putting .2mm tolerances on everything doesn't work too well. It really depends on the situation...thats another topic. I'll see if I can write up something for it.

Sorry, I've been up to my neck at work since the first. Playing catch up since the holidays. Kapusta wrote: I was wondering, is this the exact design you printed, or is this with the changes to hopefully fix the problems? Actually this is a version made before the one that was printed. Steryne wrote: This is unedited. This is what was printed. Actually you made several changes to this before it got printed. Just a few off the top of my head: (1) You removed your logo. (2) You added screw holes. (3) The corners of the face centers and edges were sharpened, made less round. (4) The pegs that slide in the groves on the back of the face centers and edges were all made the same size. Here the ones that are attached to the fixed corner are larger then the others. etc... Do you have a pdf of the exact version that was printed? Steryne wrote: It isn't so much as the neck being thick as the corners not having enough to hole onto. I tried to give everything .2mm between the next part. If the neck was smaller then the corners could have larger "wings" and therefore could hold on more. Not sure "wing" is the proper term... is there good terminology for all the parts and pieces of parts of a twisty puzzle? Terms that come to mind are foot, neck, wing, etc. but I'm not sure how well defined they are. Carl

Tanner, tolerances are a little tricky. I'm afraid that just putting .2mm tolerances on everything doesn't work too well. It really depends on the situation...thats another topic. I'll see if I can write up something for it. I'm almost leaning toward 0 tolerances myself. I think I'd rather have this puzzle too tight then too loose. If its too tight you could always sand/polish it a bit. If its too loose you are stuck. But any and all advice on tolerances is welcome. I think this is exactly the type of advice we need. Tanner, did you take .2mm in on all surfaces? That would create .4mm gaps between the pieces. Or did you take .1mm in on all surfaces? In this particular puzzle even if I wanted .2mm tolerances I don't think I'd take anything off the circle pieces as they are already so small and the most loose and then just take the tolerance off the pieces that neighbor the circles pieces. Carl

Just this week I got version 1.0 in my hands. Attachment:

Also got my Master Skewb too. Still working on version 2.0, version 1.0 is so loose it needs the Master Skewb's box just to keep pieces from falling out. Still it feels very nice to be able to dream up some complex shapes in your head and to now actually be able to hold them in your hands. Carl
