Hi all,

I have a new puzzle idea to share with the world! when in it's solved state, it looks exactly like a 3x3x3. when in it's scrambled state, it looks like....well, a scrambled 3x3x3. What's new is, each center piece is limited to 90 degree rotations, in that it can only move within a range of 90 degrees. This can also be modified to have each face be able only to turn 180 degrees. Sorry for the vague explanation, but a picture should help :D (sorry it's sideways, don't break your neck!) yes, I know it's a horrible drawing, but basically, each center has a raised segment measuring 90 degrees, while the base pieces (which attach in a Dayancrazy3x3x3-like way) have raised segments of either 90 degrees (to allow 180 degree turns) and 180 degrees (to allow 90 degree turns.)

If anyone understands what I'm saying, and wants to make it more clear or provide a better drawing, please do so! :D I'd love to see someone design this.

thanks for watching,

sj

Obviously when you do a 90 degree turn on one side that then allows you to do 180 degrees. That does limit it quite a bit, as each side could only go back and forth...

This is the same as my elevator cube idea I posted a while ago. The only differences are I designed mine with 180 degrees and ofcourse my center pieces are rotation dependent.

Interesting! That would make solving it A LOT more difficult, maybe a simple mod to a 3x3x3 instead of 3D designing it could do the trick. Does someone have any idea on how to do that? I have a vague idea so I won't say it, I'll think of it over the weekend and see what comes out.
:scrambled:  :solved:

OK, I think Tom had this idea a while back. He's already made a puzzle similar to this idea!

Well, this topic has now been rendered sort of pointless.
Here's TomZ's Constrained Cube, which is essentially the same thing (:

sadly it will not be manufactured.

If there is enough interest, I can offer my elevator cube centers for sale on shapeways.

I think it's cool that three people on their own designed the same concept.
