I have a great idea for a 2x2 mod I want to cast and build, but wondered if any of you have any thoughts what on the best mechanism/style would be to use (core etc..) I want to build this in Solidworks, but I'm not sure the best approach yet...

I'm thinking of something along the lines of a mickey / warner head puzzle. Are there any links to pictures of mechanisms for these head puzzles - homer, donald, etc... I'm afraid to take mine apart! I was thinking something similar to the K-ball / Pryramorphix key chain mech might work.

Or, does anyone have any thoughts about taking a 3x3 core, and somehow building a 2x2 from this core? I couldn't find anything with the search..

Thanks!

It's dead simple.

Which is pretty much how the ES 2x2x2 mech works, right?

Wow - thanks for the quick response. And yeah, I guess that was kind of obvious, huh?

So I'll have to go play around with that, but if I'm not mistaken from looking at this - you could theoretically use a six armed (3x3x3) core with this design?

Edit: --- no wait, this would be more like the pyramorphix keychain...? I think...

Yup, a 3x3x3 core would work just fine.

Yeah - I was figuring that out too! Of course what I'm hoping to build might go up for sale some day - I'll have to play with this and see if I can make it less - "v-cubeish"...!

The vcube-2 would have hidden edge pieces, a cut like the one above would be more like an ES.

I ES has hidden edges as well. Most 2x2x2's are just 3x3x3's. Rubik's aside (they get creative with their even numbered puzzles) that is how all massed produced puzzles work. This one uses spheres like a v-cube, while the ES, I believe, uses disks. Spheres solve a lot of problems.

Yep - After messing around with this for a little bit, I realized that even the pyramorphix key chain mech is similar in that it has the "sphere", even though it's just present at the six points of the core. Very similar to the v-cube mech actually. Actually very similar to the mechs that Drew has been building lately with the spherical cores... Cool stuff!

I have another legal question for you patent / KO experts out there (and please, I'm not trying to start another war here, I just want to know because I want to respect the patent and protect myself) - would selling a puzzle (on ebay) based on the above design be a violation of the v-cubes patent.

If so, would it still be if the puzzle shape were not cubic, but a different shape altogether?

Thanks!
