Like in last years we did in Hungary, I would like to announce the
SNOW CUBE BUILDING COMPETITION

Image

Every year at winter we make a "snow cube contest" in Hungary, now I would like to make it international!

It will be hard to manage it. but it will be fun!

In the last years we prepared some rules:
- Every participant can build any kind of twisty puzzle from snow or from ice.
- Everyone must send his/her picture to me (rubikkocka@gmail.com) with his name, and I will put it on the Internet with a "Starting" number.
- After the winter season expired in Hungary (March-April) everyone can vote for the best 3 (for 1 week)
- When the result is ready I'll announce the winners.

I Think I'll put up the pictures to here or/ and to my website (rubikkocka.hu).

This year the winner will receive a so called "Rubik Studio original cube"

Image

Here is the result of the last years:
2008-2009
2007-2008

Maybe it is not the proper Forum for this Fun, but I think this is one kine of "Puzzle building".

----------------------------------

EDIT:

From now on, I'll add the pictures here and to the official site as well:

So, You are making this more of a forum competition? Also, does it have to be made during the Hungarian Winter Season? Like e-mailed to you during that time? Because for some of us, the winter time is not upon us at the same period of time.

I think it is just Fan, not more! The prize is just to motivate people. (It will became more fun with more competitors) 8-)
I think it is more clear to say that you must made the snow cube in the time period starts now till the last day of April.
I know there are a lot of place in the world where is now snow in this season, but they can use ICE and not SNOW. I think this competition must end one day. And it is better for finish it like we did at last years.

But if you want to use snow, and you are out of this period, you can participate with your snow cube in the next years competition. :D

Is it good for you like this? :)

They're much better than my efforts!

Where I live, it rarely snows. Last year we had approximately 2cm...

Ok, thanks a lot, Left me with one question though,
Some of us have our winter period starting very soon and ending before april, would we be allowed to make a snow cube then?, And then turn it into you, or are snow cubes only allowed to be made during the Hungarian Winter Period? Leaving some of us to be forced to make an ice cube if we want to make one?

I think you did not understand me:
If you can finish your snow cube till the last day of April 2010, you can participate.
Just send the picture to me before the last day of April, and you are in the competition!
Thats all!

Brilliant stuff! :)

And from what I can see, there are already some cool pictures!

I may try to make a cube out of sand at the beach (it is summer here)
as the only place to find some snow is the... freezer!

:)

Does the size matter? I may try to make a small Dodecahedron/Icosahedron sometime around Christmas if I can get around to it. :P

I didn't think of that, Garret. Do you remember the forum member who brought up making 3x3x3s out of chocolate or out of cheese?

Yea, but his is a little different. The problem with ice puzzles is that the freezing time will take forever! But I supposed it's possible.

Weird, isn't it? By now Winnipeg would usually have a few feet, and we don't even have two inches!
I'm definately entering this when we have enough snow, I've made some pretty huge snow stuff in the past, so if time allows, I'm going BIG!

You can buy them already! Clear Rubik's 2x2x2s!

I haven't had any snow yet. It's been absolutely freezing and we've had rain that I sure was about minus 50 degrees but I haven't had anything to make a cube with. :(

made out of ice? Also, the reason i suggested ice is so that i can use a freezer... im not going to a hill top for snow to make a cube... i go sledging instead!

We got our first snow today, but it isn't enough to make anything.

Still, looking hopeful for more snow!

It should be really easy to make nice looking ice puzzles. You could simply make a two part silicone rubber mould of a whole 7x7x7 V-Cube and "cast" an ice version. You could even have puzzle lollies.

Tony, if your going to make a 7x7 out of ice, Don't go buying a dremel tip for ice, and making a new line of mods..... scratch that, start doing that.

*whistles indifferently*

ok ok I confess... WE DO HAVE SNOW!!! ARE YOU ALL HAPPY NOW???
(we just didn't want to cause panic after Antarctica was split into two, one piece went north
and then merged with the south part of Australia, and now we have a new breed of kanga-penguins
roaming all around the place...)

It is quite bad actually...

Ok I confess. The picture is from the final scene of the film Sunshine where they had to kick start the sun because it was starting to go out.
