I designed this puzzle like Jin H Kim built his 3x3x4. I designed it around using as many parts from a type A DIY as I could. You can easily craft some of the pieces yourself. Parts needed: 8x corner 8x middle layer center 8x middle layer edge 8x top layer edge 2x center extension (You can make this by cutting in half a corner cubie. It should be 9.5 mm high) 4x hidden center (You can make this by shaving down a type A DIY center piece) 4x hidden edge (You can make this by shaving down a type A DIY edge piece) 1x type A DIY core and screws, springs, washers 2x type A DIY center piece You must secure one of the middle layer edges to one of the hidden layer edges to prevent inner layer from coming out of alignment and locking up the puzzle. The pieces are pretty much the same as the ones in the Jin H Kim 3x3x4, only using 3D printing they will be way more accurate and you will get a cube that moves great. Though Jin did do a great job on his. Video of the design in actionIf you happen to construct a few of these puzzles, please be nice and offer me one. Thanks!

did you talk to Jin before posting this? Since this is based off his design I think it would be unfair to him if you just went forward without getting his O.K.

If he requests me to I'll reconsider it, but I think it isn't unfair.

Thanks Tom, this is great! BTW, I didn't take a good look at this yet, but could these parts be used to make a 3x3x5 by going out both directions? Frank

It could also be based around a 3x3 core, but you wouldn't be able to use the same pieces. There would be 4 pieces to be printed in the 3x3x5 puzzle. I might just make those files tomorrow.

I don't think that this would discourage anyone from buying Jin's. IMO the only people that are going to spend the time and money to D/L the files, get them printed, make molds and cast the pieces are people like myself that are already setup and ready to go.
I don't see anyone deciding that they are going to start casting because these files are now available. By the time someone buys everything they need (and figures out what they're doing), they've spent more than if they just bought it from Jin.....and with Jin you're guaranteed a to get a quality finished product. (nothing against Tom's design, I'm referring to the learning curve associated with casting)

Guys, just download the file, rename it to something with .zip at the end, and double-click on it. If you don't have an unzipper, you're missing out on more than just this one file.

It doesn't say download the file....you just right click on the .png picture in the first post and Save Picture As... then after saving it to your desktop (or wherever) just rename it to .zip and unzip it. If you have trouble renaming the file make sure (Tools>Folder Options>View>UNCHECK Hide extensions for known file types) then you can rename it

How much would the volume be?
V (of all pieces (one of each) together) *0,455
The result will be the cost of the print for me in €.
Please help me calculating. Thanks
David

Hmm. I stand corrected. The CAD teacher at my school told me that .stl files were unviewable, but I guess teachers are wrong sometimes. *gasp* EDIT: just downloaded a file viewer and it works great.

did you download the files and unzip them?? If so then you should have what look like certified trust certificates labeled as STL files....just right click on one and do Open With....and then select whatever stl viewer you downloaded

Here's the ZIP file...... Remember.....use WinRar or similar prog to open these. Windows Unzip will not work. EDIT: Here's a link to D/L Myriad 3D Reader/Viewer so you can 'see' the STL files. Maybe now this thread will get back on topic.
