Indeed properly utilized plastic sheets can turn out some really great work. Just do a search for some of the master works by Anthony Greenhill, as I suspect he was one of the first to really popularize using plastic sheets for shape mods.

I'm learning pretty quickly that done right, sheet plastic puzzles are so much better than molded plastic puzzles. They're lighter, and more precise, since you're using the original pieces. The only benefit of casting a puzzle like this one over sheet plastic is, it only took me 1 core to build the mastermorphix. It takes 3 cubes worth of parts to build one just using sheet plastic.
