The sun makes up 99% of our solar system.

reeeech wrote: The other day, I think it was on the Science Channel - about the whales (sperm? or blue?) and it's 80 year life span - well at least this particular whale. The program showed the routes it traveled over the years, and how it circumnavigated the earth many times. At one point, it had reached the galapagos islands and then came in contact with a huge squid (the giant squid?).
My point, was that it was spectacular watch a re-enactment of two of the largest animals on earth fighting for survival! (the whale won btw)
As big as they were, it's still sooooo small compared with everything else in the universe. Yeah, this place is huge! You can quote me on that ! reeeech wrote: Anyone ever read the book Dancing Wu Li Masters? It had a paragraph describing if you blew up an atom the size of a baseball it's first 'shell' would be the size of the sistine chapel. And pretty much blew everything else into perspective. I'm sure this isn't the first time this relation was made, but the book described it pretty well. I really recommend this book to anyone, and to anyone who is interested but can't get into the math (it talks about physics in detail without bogging you down with math formulas, and the sorts).
I've read it and I recommend it, as well as the Tao of Physics.
If an orange was the size of the Earth an atom of the orange would be the size of a cherry.
Cheers!

Here's a nice image I found on Wikipedia. It's a side by side comparison of the Sun and VV Cephei A. They're the first and last stars in the movie reeeech posted. VV Cephei A is one of the largest stars known, about 1600-1900 times the Sun's diameter. If it replaced the Sun in our solar system, it would extend to the orbit of Saturn.
And we think an Olympc 11x11x11 Cube is big!

Also, question:
How big does that make my cube?

I once was too (like ten years ago), but I was mostly into the mythologies sorrounding the stars (the signs).
For example I could name and tell the story behind almost every sign on the northern hemisphere (is that the word for it), but sadly I can't anymore...
