That's what I would have told you to do.
It seems that you do not have the correct codecs.

Same thing happens to my friend. All we had to do was to find the most recent driver for his video card and install that. If you can't find a driver, post the name of the card and ill find one for you.

i take it you have windows, hopefully a recent OS?
go to RUN - type in dxdiag. Let it run for a sec. Then go to the 'display' tab and then run it's test. Make sure all the Direct X Features are enabled (Direct Draw, Direct 3D, AGP Texture, etc).
Maybe you need to install the latest version of Direct X? it should be up to 9.0c i believe.

everything is in check there reeech, as i said i can run all my games perfectly, including power hungry games like call of duty 2, its just when it comes to playing videos, it only seems to be .wmv, .wma, .avi files that go funny, google video/you tube files are fine.

hmmm...
perhaps it's the video player you are using? i.e. real player, quick time, windows media player? sometimes it just won't play - it'll keep saying you have to install new codecs. but yeah, you've already been through that, i take it. maybe go into the software's option setting and set it to read those file types?
ok, how about this: right click on your desktop, go to properties... on the top tabs, go to settings. on that box there should be a pull down for 'display'. click on the correct video card. further down there's three buttons - 'identify' 'troubleshooting' and 'advance'.
try and see what's in the troubleshooting guide.
or you can have a go at the 'advanced' button. in there you can further tweak any settings.
sorry if you knew this already, but just writing out what i usually do to fix any video problems. good luck

update, after a little play about, i have found that:
quicktime will play .mpg files fine,
divx will play .avi file ok,
nothing will play windows media videos correctly,
the fact that i can play those two types of files is ok for now, i will keep trying to work on the media plyer ones, thanks for the help
