When we got home today, the front door was wide open and had been broken in. Among other things they took a nice metal case full of puzzles, and a briefcase full of puzzles. I haven't checked yet to see all that is missing or how many, but I've probably lost over half my collection. Some of my nicest were in the metal case that was stolen.

Oh that's awful :( I haven't got much in the way of valuable stuff that someone could steal, but losing my puzzle collection like that would be pretty devastating, on top of the trauma of the break in as well.

I'm so sorry this happened to you :(

Will they at least be covered by insurance?

Well dangit... Indeed let's keep an eye on ebay and other sites that sell second hand things.

I am so sorry to hear this Robert Paul :( I hope the person who did this will get what he deserves!

Oh Bud! I am really sorry to hear this! The awful violation that someone has been in your house and also the loss of your puzzle collection! I really hope that it is all covered by insurance and it does look like most are still available now and can eventually be replaced. It's odd that a thief would take plastic toys!

If the insurance company doesn't pay up then maybe we can set up a TP collection to get you started again?

What a desperate loser that was! That stuff's only valuable to people like us.. to replace it.. which you probably won't replace most of them anyway, because you've solved them and you'd rather spend the money on a new challenge, I suppose. I hate that that's happened to you :( .

Wow, I'm very sorry this happened... :( I could easily understand how you feel right now.

Most likely, he took them to sell for money. It would be nice if he was caught doing so.

I doubt that the thief even knew what he/she was taking while in the act of doing it. He/she took a nice looking metal case and briefcase with the expectation that there were valuable items in them. Unfortunately, when the thief later discovered that they contained what he/she would probably consider to be just plastic toys they were probably disposed of since the thief wouldn't consider them to be valuable.

So sorry to hear that Robert. I hope the thief will be caught someday.

I got a friend who has been robbed before too but he lost some other valuable thing but not puzzle. He had a nice puzzle shelf but all the puzzles are still inside after the robbing. I don't know it is a fortunate thing or not.

Ouch!

I always fear something like this going to happen.
Were any of them (rare/more expensive) custom puzzles? (Admittedly I haven't checked the whole list)
I try to keep my collection listed on my website server including the paid prices and transaction numbers
(not visible to public and also save in case of fire). You'll never know.

I hope, you can collect the puzzles important to you once again.

I feel with you!

I'd be very curious to know

1. What else was taken?
2. Where were the briefcase and metal case kept, was it somewhere a thief would easily stumble upon them?
3. Were the briefcase and metal case open or locked so they would know what was inside?

If you have not seen where I am going with this...

Is it likely the thief knew what he was looking for?
Is this break in as random as you might wish to think?

Just food for thought.

Finally, I am devastated for you and will also keep a sharp eye out in case we see this collection for sale. I will pray that somehow there is a positive outcome and that there is possibility you will recover your puzzles.

A laptop computer, jewelry, and lots of drawers were opened and emptied.

In my study closet (used to be a bedroom when the kids were at home). The briefcase, the metal case, and two cardboard boxes were stacked on a desk in the closet. All contained puzzles. They left the cardboard boxes full of puzzles.

They were unlocked.

It's not just the loss of your puzzles, your home was invaded and your personal things rifled through and stolen. I can only imagine how you feel.

Don't despair, you will rebuild! I am sure many members here will keep their eyes peeled for anyone trying to pass off your puzzles online.

Yeah, I had some extra time earlier so I went through all the craigslist regions in California earlier. Sadly I found nothing :(

Are there any toy collectors/toy shops in the area? Maybe the person saw what they were and decided that if they were in such cases they might be worth something to say, a collector, and given the fact they are toys... It's just a suggestion, and most likely won't turn up anything, but in the least they can keep a lookout for a shady guy coming and trying to sell some twisty puzzles.

Sorry to hear this. Life does go on, and the main thing is to stay strong and positive.
I am sure all of us here will keep an open eye for any suspicious auction and/or sale.

A few years back, during a University sporting event, I had my backpack stolen, filled
with puzzle prototypes plus many more important personal objects (glasses, mobile,
camera, and wallet filled with cash I had just withdrawn as I was going an overseas
conference in a few hours!). I won't even mention the sentimental value. It seemed
devastating, but then I thought, that I would never want to be in the thief's position
and live his sad life. In the end, I actually felt sorry for him/them.

A year later, I found my house broken into, and the thieves were still inside the house.
Unsurprisingly, the next day I was on the front cover of the local newspaper (I can get
very temperamental and I made sure those thieves did not have a good time - they
were unsuccessful).

That said, I hope the unpleasant feeling of having your personal space being invaded
goes away. Thankfully, there are some steps to take to avoid such instances in the future.

I feel so very sorry for you. If the intruder ever comes in my house when I'm home and he whats my stuff or worse yet injure me I'll make damn sure he'll be breathing through a straw the rest of his life because my puzzles are my children. I'm very passionate about my puzzles.

I have never been robbed like this so I have no real idea how you feel, but I it must be very bad for you. I hope that you can get over this ASAP.

I hope that I never cross you in real life, because I could never feel like this about someone who stole some of my possessions, no matter how much I value them. Now if someone threatened my loved ones ...

Well, there are many. Some of them more drastic than others.

One is better door locks, another is safer windows (which do not break easily),
and another is living on higher floors with no access to balconies etc.

When I travel to Thailand (where we mass produce), there are always three guards
guarding the apartment block, though the country of Thailand has wonderful people,
and despite staying there for months, nothing has happened to me personally.

The philosophy is, if the thief makes our life more difficult, then we should make theirs too.
You may do some research to move to a safer suburb/town, or even... country!

After living in Western Australia for eighteen years - mind you, in some of the best
suburbs - where I had the above incidents, and six bicycles stolen, I am now living
on a small Greek island of 200 people, with a zero theft rate! When I go out, I sometimes
leave my key on the door. Yes, this is Greece, the "corrupted" country in "crisis" with 6000 islands
(add a lot of sarcasm here to people who are silly enough to believe the mass media).

And remember, we live in an imperfect world, so nothing and nowhere is absolutely safe.
