I would think this would be fairly achievable with mostly off the shelf technology. Really it would be a modified Rubik's cube, six servo motors and some clever brain in the core along with the power source. I figured someone from MIT would have made this by now as some kind of robotics project.
Edit - actually with one servo motor doing the twisting, and one servo motor controlling a clever transmission, it could be done with two motors.
