So.
I installed this Program called Solid Edge ST6 Student version and since then I have a yahoo search bar and the yahoo search as standart when I start up fire fox. It's weird because during the installation of SE I saw the question and I denied installing that bar.

I can't get rid of it since then. I want google back as default. What I already tried:

I used the "about:config" comand and set "browser.search.defaultenginename" to the value Google, as well as the "selectedengine".

It works until restart of browser

I installed this little add on from mozilla: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... archreset/

It works only until restart of browser

I looked for any yahoo programs via control panel. There are no!

I checked my add ons. There are no yahoo add ons. I read this one forum post about some "helper 101" that had to be deleted to make it go away. But I don't have such named add on either.

I started firefox with deactivated add ons via "help" in the browser. This doens't even change it until the next restart only. It just lets the yahoo thing there. When I start the browser in safe mode it's still there.

I looked for anything in msconfig. I can't find yahoo related things.

Oh and Of course I used the adjust option of the search bar to delete or remove the unwanted yahoo thing but it comes back.

And by the way it is not the normal Yahoo bar:

This one exists but is of no problem

The one I can't get rid of looks like this:

When I search in C:\Program Files this is what I get:

Can anyone help?

Wow I can't believe this:

I found another topic online telling me this:

Work around that I have used (my machine is running Windows XP SP3 might work on other systems as well):

1) Ensure Firefox is closed, if necessary read this in another browser

2. Open the Firefox directory on the hard drive (typically: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox)

3. Go into the 'searchplugins' folder

4. Delete the file named 'yahoo.xml'

5. Immediately restart your machine

it's found here: https://support.mozilla.org/de/questions/765382

Now the crazy thing: In that folder (which is actually in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\browser\searchplugins) there are exactly 7 files there, one of which is called yahoo. However as I said, I have this additional red Yahoo sign up there and in the drop down menu I infact have 8 entries total.

I did delete the yahoo file. Infact after restart, the purple non-problem yahoo thing is gone. The red one is still there!

By the way one more thing: That one time, when I used the about:config command to get into the list and change all yahoo values to google, a little window popped up in the bottom right corner of the screen. One from the Windows explorer apparently.

It told me "This message is informing you of any unwanted changes in the search functions of the browser and making sure you stay set up as you wanted." Or something similar. Sorry, no screenshot of that. I was able to klick yes or no. When I clicked no, the browser crashed. Only task manager could help. Since then, this message never came back up again.

Yes, I know this is crazy, but here I am again.

So I tried the new profile trick. Creating a new profile via "firefox.exe -ProfileManager" (typed into the search bar of Win7 in Startup Menue) did the trick. The new profile did not have the weird red yahoo bar in it. It was set to google as standard.

Then I changed to the old profile back, and it is still Google. Really I did nothing more, except opening a new profile and then the old one again. After starting the browser a couple of times it is fixed. I will later reboot the computer and hopefully my post will be positive.

Still the thought anoys me that there is or was some weird hidden programm in the system that did what it wanted.

1) Go to: Control Panel -> Add/remove programs
2) Look for Yahoo search or something along those lines
3) Uninstall it.
4) Remove any leftover add-ons from your browser.

This is not the fault of the Yahoo! toolbar. You have the "Spigot" malware on your machine. It's the software running resetting everything and forcing you back over to Yahoo.

You should give Malware Bytes Anti-Malware a try.

If you're still having trouble with this malware, try Googling for removing "Spigot Search Settings".

Hi. So.. Brandon do you by chance have a little info for me on how to use that prog?
I mean I did install it, and I did the quick search. It found 8 infected objects! Actually my Antiviros prog is up to date. Anyway I deleted the infected files (some were that pup.optional.bandoo thing and one was a trojan) and I had to restart.
After that I tried both, the about:config thing and the administrate search bar options, where I removed the yahoo thing, but after another restart of the computer it's still there.

So do I need to let that program test firefox specifically?

By the way, I did the update first.

And if all this shouldn't help is a new profile going to?

I thought about the installation of Solid Edge again, and I think I recall that the question whether or not I would like to install yahoo stuff actually came up during the installation of a "CAD to PDF" programm that wanted to be installed additionally.
As I said, I unchecked everything but still...

Thanks again for any more help.

Sure it was :)

I don't know what you use your PC for, but you could give a GNU/Linux distro a go. I'd advise you to try Ubuntu :D

And give up my super intuitive and super duper safe ... or ... windows?
I am to old for that!

Oh and THANK YOU BRANDON.
I checked that spigot.inc software out. And infact I found directly under the mentioned "pdf creator" a programm called "pdfforge toobar v7.0".
Needless to say I so totally killed it.
Now after removing the yahoo thing from the search bar with the normal searchbar options and even after rebooting, it is...
GONE!

I know it's not even important, and switching it is a matter of not even seconds but don't you like the feeling of being in charge?

The malware ecosystem has changed so much over the last 2+ decades that "virus" is no longer a particularly accurate term for malicious software. Antivirus software is still primarily focused on software that is 100% malicious with no legitimate purpose. Also, AV is geared towards detection and deletion, not careful removed. A lot of malware makes major changes to Windows and your software (like Firefox settings for example). AV will removed the malware without trying to restore settings to their original state.

Unfortunately there's a lot of somewhat legitimate malware like what you had. There is a company behind the product and no doubt via some crazy EULA, what they're doing is mostly legal. That doesn't change the fact that what it's doing on your computer is against your wishes. Software like Malware Bytes Ant-Malware focus on removing this sort of software and trying to restore some of the altered settings.

Yeap, that program is sheer power. You still need to be careful with all those spyware/malware
going on lately, as sometimes they need specialised attention. Glad your problem is fixed now.

:)
