Post subject: FREE Petaminx Files *Repaired RAR link* Posted: Mon Dec 29, 2008 5:05 pm |

*Edit* The RAR went missing for a while due to the FTP site moving things around. I also didn't have any of the original files. however thanks to Jason for emailing them to me the Zip file has been restored!~ As you no doubt have guessed, I decided to give you all free files to a Petaminx. the height of the puzzle is 122mm in height. While the parts are small, the puzzle should function. Whomever is brave enough, good luck! If someone does build one, and decides to sell it, please contact me before selling, thanks! The RAR file can be found HEREthe parts were designed in mm The part counts are as follows: 1 Core 12 Centers 12 Center Caps 20 Corners 30 Edges 60 of each of the remaining parts..... 975 pieces in total.....

I assume that this is the same as mechanism that V-Cubes invented for their 9x9x9 cube? (Tony fisher had this one post up some time where he showed us pictures of the mechanism from Olympicube at that time. I just fail to find this topic again can someone help? I tried several times already I am apparently to dump to find these pictures again. ) Anyway I will probably have to hope and wait vor the mass produced V-cube 9 from them but still I am excited to see the first one made by you too! (Still you should spare your funds and first get that Elite Skewb cube done first if you ask me. )

You guys know this is a petaminx and not a 9x9, right? You can tell by the pentagonal center cap.
Drew, you are amazing. In the past week you've shown us more some of the most amazing puzzles ever created, keep up the fantastic work.

Maybe it's just me, but the more something like this is dragged out, the more excited I got. I'm sure this is one of Drew's intentions. Besides, what info? It's pretty obvious it's a Petaminx.

Back in August, Drew stated that he had 3D files for a Petaminx. It'll be nice to see it come to life as the Teraminx did.

Wow! 20 unique parts! I imagine this must be printed completely, and in high resolution. I couldn't picture anyone actually casting this thing. Bradley mentioned once that 3d printing cost is working its way down, and that in a few years people will have these on their desks at home. Maybe then I'll tackle it. Or maybe Bradley can print it, since he has the machines. This one would probably sell for a small fortune.

How much would it cost to print the whole thing now? It would probably be in the $7500-10000 range right? The only problem would be the fact that it wouldn't sell for nearly that much.

personally unless i had to sell it (if by some odd chance i could ever make it) i would never think of it unless i had to for some unknown reason such as money wise.

Man, I want to see Bradley's quote for printing this monster out. I also imagine it would take at least a few days to print. Also, if it's not too much trouble, could you post these in .iges format as well so we can look at them too?

So this puzzle can or can't be cast? The pieces seem very very very intricate. I'm pretty sure even the slightest shrinkage would ruin the entire design.

I think that this should be a joint project. Three or four people could take the liberty to cast part of the puzzle and then the pieces will be shipped to one person to assemble and STICKER (1212 if i am correct)

I downloaded these just in case. If i ever get the hankering i'll try to build one myself, but honestly that's way far off. I don't have the money to get the basic masters printed right now anyway. Perhaps over summer...regardless of whether it's been done by then anyway.

Not to point any fingers but I have the feeling certain members will try to bite off more than they can chew and ruin the project for everyone. It would definitely not be a first, second, or even third experience with casting. And remember, 4 people would still have over 200 parts each. I suggest more than 5 people should try. Also people will need to pitch in to get the masters printed. Maybe Bradley can be considered a "Contributor" for his 3D printing and he can have time with the puzzle too. In the end I suppose Drew would be the person to "own" the puzzle since its his design.

Drew, you are amazing. In the past week you've shown us more some of the most amazing puzzles ever created, keep up the fantastic work Yes of course. But Yesterday evening (night) it was really late and the topic said only "Santa's late gift" and I didn't see a picture of the center cap only some edgepieces and corners so I really thought it was supposed to be a 9x9 cube. Now I understand why the picture that was up for download with the edges and corners was called "Peta". Yeah I feel a bit embarrassed. But Petaminx is better than 9x9 cube anyway.

This is great and all, but the outermost central edges are so thin... why is that? With the smallish size of the puzzle, it seems like it'd be impossible to get stickers on it and have them stay there.

Is it just me, or are two of the .stl files corrupt in the new .rar? WinRAR tells me that center.stl and middle_edge.stl are corrupt and can't be extracted. I've also tried using WinZIP...anybody having this problem?

No problem here. I downloaded and unrar'd both versions, and no problems. Try downloading it again.
