i was browsing through a thread and saw a good comment that made me laugh and since im used to Youtube's 'Like' feature, and indeed facebooks like feature, i thought it would be a great addition to the site just an idea, post a reply on you opinion

If there was a like/dislike button, I would have used it to give this idea the tumbs down.

Seriously though, the beauty of this small community is the richness and quality of feedback that people tend to give. I think a like/dislike button would not add any real value, and may actually discourage people from giving such qualitative, thought-provoking feedback that I and others actually like to read. It's the *depth* of conversation that ties us all together so well.

And people can always add a poll to get simple statistical feedback, if that's all they want.

For example, you could have added a poll to ask people if they like the idea of having a like/dislike button, but I think you'll agree it's more interesting to hear what people think in depth, rather than just yes/no.

Just my thoughts.

Like/dislike buttons are so impersonal and don't really tell us anything. I mean you could be sitting on the fence and not care one way or another but feel you need to click a button.

Without that silly button, we get good ideas going. Arguements sometimes, but almost always with good points made.

Put me down for an official Dislike of the Like/Dislike button. The idea of this site is to increase meaningful communication. A Like/Dislike button just ups the signal/noise ratio.

People need to remember that Sandy is paying real money to run this site, and I'm sure seeing high-quality conversations is part of his motivation to keep it going. If you're going to post a message, it shouldn't be of the +1 variety. If you don't have anything of substance to add, it's OK to just read the message and move on.
