I think this is a wonderful idea! I have a bunch of non twisty puzzles!!
Secondly,i think it is very strange that jail breaking an iphone manages to become a topic on a twisty puzzles forum??????????

I agree. Most of my puzzles are non-twisty.

I agree as well. Besides mechanical puzzles, it would be a great place to discuss other things like pencil puzzles, puzzle games, math puzzles, and riddles.

I have searched for some forums on those topics other than this website, but talking about (for instance) burr puzzles seems to have completely different jargon than this forum.
I would love to see an understandable non-twisty puzzle section on this site, since a bout half of my collection is non-twisty. Of course TWISTYpuzzles.com shouldn't be stamped full of things non-twisty, but we have an Off Topic section, so why not this?

Indeed, such a proposal has been made many times in the past. And now, it might be the right time to do so. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2267&start=0viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6266&start=0viewtopic.php?f=2&t=11279&start=0viewtopic.php?f=7&t=17246&start=0For Hanayama: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=17804&start=0Some time ago, I even proposed a general classification to include all puzzles: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=14758&start=0Japanese Boxes: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=18143&start=0Isis, Revomaze, etc, and many other could be listed in a more appropriate category. Previously, the Off-topic was "good enough" but now it does not seem to be the case. And even if it outgrows the General (twisty) forum, that would certainly not be a bad thing. We could help (me included) to move some of the non-twisty puzzle topics which are scattered around the place, and place them to the new non-twisty puzzle forum. Pantazis

Tony, I understand where you are coming from. I have an eclectic collection and want info on other puzzles as well. But as Oskar has said there are many other forums available. For me, Off topic is fine. Sonic warp has one, there is John Rausch's forum, puzzle Brains, just to name a few.
Another section would add more to the traffic and in the end add more to the bill. I think Off topic is perfect, if people have questions they should feel free to ask them in off topic.

Not an attempt to expand the forum or compete with others. Also, to me it doesn't feel right to have the off topic forum as a mix of puzzle (non twisty) and non puzzle. I do understand what you say about traffic though.

I don't believe in going to another forum just to discuss puzzles that aren't specifically "twisty". Although this site is called TwistyPuzzles.com, I have never seen it as a restriction to post about non twisty puzzles in the appropriate categories. If there is a rule against this, my apologies, I did not know this.
For example, I see nothing wrong with posting a thread in "Solving Puzzles" for the Brainstring Advanced. It is solving a puzzle, and it's even sold in the Twisty Puzzles Shop!

From what I can see everyone agrees to that for... different reasons! Myself, I would love to see some excellent puzzles being shown around not only to stop all those "twisty puzzle mind blocks", but to also encourage using a mix of new and unique techniques for twisty puzzles. Merging of puzzles is something unavoidable, and it would be good if the best source is right here. I have said too many times that we tend to focus too much on "too similar puzzles".(did I just used the word "too" three times in the same sentence???) The truth is that there are infinite possibilities for new designs, and this place is a goldmine for creativity. So maybe it is time to expand the "experience mindset" of the individual puzzlers of this forum by just merging many types of puzzles together. (I said "merge" using different forums, and not "mix them up" like a Greek salad!) There are many different types (interlocking, secret boxes, trick locks, vanishing, impossible objects, entanglement, jugs, matching, etc etc etc) that many people here do not even know their existence (I also did not, until a few years ago!). So assuming that an "other puzzles forum" resumes, it is very possible that eventually (maybe after 5-10 years) we will be forced to even split it into sub-forums in order to accommodate each individual category. But this is normal, as all other types outnumber by far our twisty puzzles. In my opinion the more difficult task (which is not really anything difficult) would be in agreeing to what do we mean by "twisty puzzle". Will that be equivalent to a "one-piece mathematical puzzle"? (I use that definition for the Uni puzzle club, which is why I named it Mechanical & Mathematical Puzzle Club - MMPC). To conclude, we should be using the Rubik's Cube remarkable success to build a forum (inside this twisty forum) for *all* puzzles. After all, Rubik's Cube was the most successful of *all*puzzles (not just twisty), so it will be more than appropriate to host all puzzle breeds here. The only drawback I can find to all this, is giving Sandy more hosting woes! Pantazis

Sounds like more in favour (myself included) than against. Let's give it a shot and remember to reflect back in a few months to see how its going.

Ok, here is what I have been doing. Many nice posts are already in the non-twisty puzzle forum. If you know any other post(s) which deserve to go there, please PM or tell me here. For obvious reasons, posts involved in collecting and sales (marketing forum) will stay as they are. Finally, I have moved the general classification that I proposed (not the twisty one). If anyone has any objections also let me know! Many thanks! Pantazis

Not a big issue, but I thought I'd mention it. Normally on the Board index, it will show a orange page next to forums with topics that are unread right? Well the Non-Twisty Puzzles forum has unread items (threads with orange pages next to them) but on the board index, the page next to it is white. I'm guessing it has something to do with the fact that the threads did not originating from it.

To continue with the definitions: Twisty puzzle means any (usually) one-piece mathematical puzzle, which "includes" (for example) sliding puzzles, rotational puzzles, folding-hinged-plate puzzles, puzzles with hole(s) etc. There are exceptions such as the Rolling Cubes and the Triamid which are still under Twisty Puzzles. Rubik's Revolution is now in the Non-Twisty section, while I am thinking of also moving the 360. I believe the 360 is more of a dexterity puzzle, so it belongs to the Non-Twisty section. But I need some feedback regarding this. Any thoughts? Pantazis

You're probably right, Guilty. Let's wait until Pantazis is done moving threads around before we assume there's any problem worth fixing.

On the same note, puzzles like brainstring, enigmas (the rotational ones), snakes, buvos golyuok and bolygok are considered twisty, while non-sequential matching puzzles with many pieces such as instant insanity are not considered as twisty. Origami is also non-twisty. Sandy, I am done for a few days! (please feel free to fix any errors). Pantazis
