“Twisted Symmetry” is a new rolling ball maze puzzle with new features introduced for 2012. The new features include larger size, stiffer rods and frame, new difficulty level and symmetric designs incorporated into the faces. “Twisted Symmetry” and “Minotaur’s Castle” are the latest addition to my Ethereal Maze Puzzles, available through my Shapeways shop.
The outer faces of the maze cube have an intricate symmetrical pattern, but the internal path has been so twisted upon itself that any hint of symmetry is lost to oblivion.
There are plenty of dead ends in this maze so it is significantly more difficult than “Minotaur’s Castle”. This maze is also more difficult than “Escher’s Playground” because it has many more turns and a longer path.
The new larger size for this maze make it much easier to see inside and keep track of where you are, and which way to turn next. In addition to the larger size, this maze has much thicker rails compared to smaller mazes such as “Escher’s Playground”. Even thicker rails are used for the frame along the overall outer edges of the maze. These makes for a much stiffer maze.
A symmetrical pattern has been incorporated into each face of the maze cube. You can make these patterns really pop out by coloring them. A quick and simple method is to use highlighter markers, or Sharpie colored markers. To make it a real work of art you can paint them. Use a small brush and the small bottles of enamel paint used for plastic models. Testors brand enamel paints were used for the painted models on this page. These are available at Michaels craft stores, or at hobby shops. There are many variations of patterns possible depending on which sections of the rails you color, and which colors you use – this allows you to make your maze a unique work of art.
The dimensions of this maze is 56mm wide on each side, or about 2 ¼ inches. This is the size of a Rubik’s Cube.
General Information about Ethereal Maze Puzzles:Ethereal Maze Puzzles are mazes that you solve by rolling a ball through an innovative new three dimensional lattice structure which forms the maze paths. The goal is to roll the ball through the maze from the entrance to the exit. Start by pushing the ball into the spring loaded entrance ( it looks like a backwards “J”). Tip the maze in different directions to roll the ball along the paths through the maze. Don’t worry, if you make a wrong turn, the ball will not fall out of the maze. If the ball runs into a dead-end you can just roll the ball back the opposite way and try another path, that’s all part of this fun challenge. When you reach the exit there is a spring loaded button to press to release the ball from the maze. The exit is in a corner of the maze, where you will find a bar with the little button sticking out from the side of the maze.
