I finished this puzzle just after the Pyraminx Ultimate. It came about by accident really since I never intended on making one. In this thread I will talk a little about how both puzzles were constructed without going into specifics. As most of you have realised the Pyraminx Ultimate was made by extending a regular 3x3x3 cube in all six directions. Although my extensions are a little different to Jin's, his 3x3x5 technique certainly inspired me to tackle this puzzle. This is the process I went through to make the Pyraminx Ultimate-

1. I first constructed the five different types of piece you see on the Cross Cube. This was a purely intimidatory step towards the Pyraminx Ultimate.
2. I made moulds of these five pieces. Two of which are the right shape for the Ultimate.
3. Three of the new pieces needed modifying and new moulds were made of these modified pieces.
4. All Pyraminx Ultimate moulds were now ready for the casting of the actual pieces used.

As a by product of this process I had all the moulds required to make my Cross Cube also. In fact during the making of the Pyraminx Ultimate if I had any spare mixed resin I simply threw it in one of those extra moulds. By the time I finished the Ultimate I almost had enough pieces for the Cross Cube so I decided I might as well make it also. It was a bit of a rush job since there's other things I should be getting on with. For some reason this puzzle really appeals to me. I think it's because it is so much like a Rubik's Cube yet quite different. As you may have guessed rotational movement is similar to the Ultimate though at least with the Cross Cube you can turn it easier because of it's shape. On the Pyraminx Ultimate the angles make it difficult to grasp or keep the "side" you're turning in line.
I am not sure if the Pyraminx Ultimate can be simulated on any other puzzle but the Cross Cube is equivalent to a 5x5x5 ignoring the corners and edges.
You may have seen photos of puzzles that look like my Cross Cube before. I am pretty sure however they are not fully functional.

Makes it much easier to see how the pyraminx ultimate is made. I see how it is like doing the centres of a 5x5x5. The "Ultimate" is very pretty, but this has a different kind of charm about it.

I was actually writing up a compilation of Twisty Puzzle stuff. This was one of the puzzles I was discussing and how it could be made.

I called it "Extended Face" in lieu of Mike Grimsley's "Baby Face" and theorized "Face" puzzle.

Tony, approximately how long do your builds take? I know it varies alot, but for example how long did it take you to build your Pyraminx Ultimate?

Looks good Tony, and you misspelled your name in the title as "Tony Fsher's CROSS CUBE".

this is equivilant to the triacontaminx v2, this is like the triacontaminx v1 only made with 3x3s and not 2x2s. once again my idea has been stolen, although i am glad that a professional like Tony was able to create a nice looking one where as i probably would have made one that either looked bad, or turned bad.

I think the idea has been around for many years daddrivesmecrazy. I have no idea where I got it from. Possibly one of those non functional extended puzzles or from one of the many discussions about 3x3x5s.

Very neat. It's not just the center of a 5x5, though, it's the centers of a 5x5 supercube (although the center-centers don't have orientation in this one). Very neat. I'd like to try solving something like that one day.

what method did you use to extend the faces out?

i've looked around and seen several methods, but they keep contradicting each other on what you should and should not do

Undoubtedly you could create a functioning cross-cube by extending a conventional cube on all six sides, but that's not what Tony was describing in his first post. All of these pieces are custom-made, they're not modifications of conventional parts.

That would be crazy a 4x4x4 ultimate made from a Rubik's 4x4x4, this way you could extend every side and also extend it again with the center part, the same way you would do it with a 2x2x6.
