While building a half truncated cube today i did a little bit of a different mod on the cube. i pointed the corners and came up with a star truncated puzzle. here are the pics of it. tell me what you think of it.

Nifty!

I never would have thought of doing that. Very nice workmanship too!

It'd be neat to see that applied to a Mastermorphix as well. Sort of a visual stepping-stone to a 3x3x3 Stella Octangula.

C/o Jaap's page (http://www.geocities.com/jaapsch/puzzles/ideas.htm):

Quote:
A stella octangula with 4 pieces along each diagonal edge could theoretically have a 3×3×3 cube embedded in it, with the middle layers twice as thick as the outer ones. This has the interesting property that the edge pieces of the underlying cube correspond to two seemingly separate parts of the surface. It may be hard to adapt the standard cube mechanism to this shape since the corners overhang during a turn, so the middle layer probably has to be less thick for it to work.

This thread got me thinking. Here are some rough sketches of what higher-order mophixes would look like.

What if we stellated the 4 order mod, sort of the way Adam did his? This could be a very interesting puzzle. I wonder if it could work.

My initial thoughts are about size... esp the 5x5x5 Morphminx. Because of the physical size of some of the cubies, it seems as if it would have to be almost 100% of a build-up... trunc'ing the pieces as in the 3x3x3 var would destroy most of the material on some of the interior cubies and leave nothing much to append to in that manner... but if you built-up on the pieces from the get go, sure, I think it would make one heck of a puzzle...

Lemme know when you build one Carter...

Yes, the 5 order morphix would be humongous. It would indeed be almost 100% build-up because you can only chop off two cubies in each corner. Each tip would be very large and supported by a single corner. Structurally, these tip pieces might be weak. The puzzle would weigh a ton.
