Gear and Slide by OSKAR

Hi Twisty Puzzles fans,

Gear and Slide combines gearing and sliding in a single twisty puzzle. Such a combination was suggested by Khaled Habbab. After rejecting a whole bunch of puzzle concepts that are either unstable or no fun to play, this one was selected. The puzzle combines 23 sliding pieces and a void with eight turning corners. All corners turn in the same direction, reusing the gear designs from Polo Gear Cube for the internal gearing mechanism.

It's really a dream.
So the corners basically turn like those of a gear shift except that they all have a ratio of 1 and can't be disengaged right?

I would love to have one. I might even like this one better than Bram's cube.

EDIT: Concerning the question in the video: I think you can't. I didn't use math to determine and I wouldn't know how. But I just followed the piece around the center circle in my mind: slide, turn, slide, turn, slide,... At the end it will be in the same spot and still wrong as far as orientation is concerned. And since it wouldn't matte around which center you do the sequence, I don't see how it could ever be different. I guess going around the whole cube with it won't change that either. So my answer is it can't change orientation in a certain place. Or orientation at all for that matter.

This seems a lot like that Tomy puzzle I forget the name of. The 2D one with 7 notched circular pieces, all the notches but one filled with ball bearings.

I answer your question with NO.
The gear move does not change the orientation of a piece. The slide move always changes the orientation.
The corners of this puzzle can be split into two sets like the corners of the skewb. There is no pair of adjacent corners of the same type in the skewb. Each piece will always have an orientation which is determined by the set of corners it is placed in.

Oskar: Why haven't you named it after the Minimal Twist? When I saw the gear move I first thought about that puzzle?
