My bandaged diy kit arrived today. I did a little unboxing video.

I'm so impressed with cubetwist. This looked to be a great idea and I'm just blown away by the sheer hours of pleasure awaiting. I've made a fuse cube and solved it and everything turns really nicely.

My only (extremely slight) issue is that if you push the pieces on too hard it's very difficult to get them off. If anyone has any bright ideas for prising them off without damaging them, let us know.

Also in the video I pose a question about some of the holes in some of the pieces and why they're slightly different. I have no idea. If you watch it and know, please tell me.

Overall, an absolutely fantastic idea and puzzle and I repeat my plea to cubetwist to do the same for the 444 and 555.

I would use one of those plastic spudger tools you can buy, used to take ipods/iphones apart.

Yes, my plan is to start by solving the ones that have already been mass produced. there are about 5 or 6 of them, right? And then hopefully start getting an idea of what kinds of variations would make fun puzzles. I'm really really interested in knowing about that number (3563) of puzzles which can be made, why it's that number. And I think we actually might need some kind of naming scheme...at least once the first 500 have been made

I think this has made me a lofelong Cubetwist fan.

I'd like a bandageable 6x6 as it could be bandaged into a bandaged 6x6/(bandaged)5x5/(bandaged)4x4/(bandaged)3x3/(bandaged)2x2...

The bandaging tile collection for it would be rather impractically big

1. Download this program I posted here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=24406
2. Run "Move everything to left list" in the Edit-menu.
3. Run "Filter for surface-bandagings only" in the Edit-menu.
4. Run "Trivial paths" in the Edit-menu.
5. Run "Filter permutation-free variants" in the Edit-menu.

All variants you now can see in the left list are the ones which are
1. non-trivial
2. implementable without the need of face-core-bonds.The program demonstrates one although it might be extremely technical. I haven't found an easier one which is equally precise.

What I'm getting curious about is from Andreas' 3,000ish variations, how to tell which ones would make a "good, challenging but not ridiculously difficult" bandaged cube variant. If you have ideas on this, please post!

Mine came yesterday, with a whole load of other puzzles i ordered at the same time, so i haven't played with it much yet - I've tried one 'simple' bandaging on it so far - a 3x1 piece on 2 opposite faces in the centre layer, but oriented at 90 degrees to each other - can't solve it for the life of me

I will say the cube itself is excellent quality, it turns really great. I need to get a tiny screwdriver or something for levering the pieces off though - currently i use a knife, that can't be a good idea in the long term great puzzle though, i expect to have many many hours of fun with it

Mine arrived today as well. Took it apart and lubed and tensioned it all the way, nice cube, feels good. Haven't played too much with mine either as mine ALSO arrived with a bunch of other things (shengshou mirror, but also a wooden cat house to assemble, one can consider that a puzzle lol), but I intend to stick the pieces on this evening and see what I can achieve *grin*

Is there any accepted notation for describing one of these bandaged puzzles?
Are we going to have a thread or site where we post the varying types, their difficulty and even solutions/hints for each? (remember I'm not very bright and a beginner at this - at least for bandaged cubes!)

I only have 1 bandaged 3x3 in my collection and haven't dared scramble it yet! I've been too frightened of it - now I potentially have 1000s! What have I let myself in for?

At least with this one you can just take the tiles off if you can't solve it, so you don't have to worry about it sitting on the shelf unsolved

I agree with this apart from one teeny minor detail. The screw on my yellow face doesn't seem to be long enough so every so often it comes out. I screw it back in again. I hesitate to write this as it's still amazing value even without one screw.

Me too. I got this cube about a year ago. I tried to solve it and didn't make it very far. I had some PMs with a very patient Burgo; he showed me the method he's now put on the solving thread. I tried it but it just didn't click. So after a while I sold it.

Then the kit came out and I made it again and realised it was the same one. I also had a look for bandaged cube videos and tutorials but, like Konrad, found very few.

Something must have changed with me this time because I did what I once read Tony Fisher advise: pretend your life depends on solving it. I refused to not be able to solve it. And things started falling into place. (Amazing what a bit of pressure does.) My added complication was that I refuse to use anything other than ultimate solution algs, being UR'U'LURU'L and FR'F'R (and similar). After a number of hours working on it, I'm now calling it one of my favourite cubes. And I made some videos showing the method, but more on that in the solving thread.

I'm still quite keen to find people's ideas of what will make a good challenge. For instance, I made this cube

which differs from the hidetoshi only in the placement of the red-blue bandaged block. I wanted to see whether it would significantly change the solving. It didn't. In fact, it made it easier to solve the corners. But I'm not sure why. I'm not visual enough to "see" why this should be the case.

Hah - try what i just went through! my latest order had tracking number - checking that told me it should arrive on monday. I was at home, aroudn midday a message along the lines of 'unable to locate addressee - delivered' appeared on it.

later something else was added about it being held at my local post office. nobody knocked at my door, no failed delivery card left or anything! i was panicking thinkingthat somebody else had my puzzles

I ordered a 3x3x5 from Smaz one time. I ordered it about 2 weeks before we were due to move house. (Yes, laugh now...) I got it sent to the old address because I had setup mail redirection for a year. It didn't come. It still didn't come. Then I phoned the post, and they said "You signed for it a few weeks back". then I found out they don't do mail redirection for packages anyway, only letters. Turns out the new owner's parents signed for it (stupid post man/woman was supposed to check for ID), then put it in their car and forgot about it. About 7 weeks later someone finally worked out it didn't belong to them and I eventually got it back through the real estate agent. It was unopened, undamaged and I treasured it.

Oh man.. wow.. I would absolutely hate to see that happen.

I am already upset when they deliver at the neighbors and I find they aren't home by the time I get back from work and find the slip in the door.


There is one neighbor they sometimes deliver at.. and there is this really big obvious note on the BELL even to NOT deliver mail there. I don't WANT my mail there. I actually wrote a complaint to the post when they did it again, and post folk came back with "You have to let the seller know that it cannot be delivered there".

Right.. from China. With the language barrier as bad as it is, the difference between DO and DO NOT can go to mush real fast, but suppose we jump that hurdle successfully, then the next one. The folk delivering here barely know English let alone Dutch sometimes!

I am not home, they see the number, they don't see the "do not", they just give it to THOSE neighbors because that number is on there.

I finally received mine. I like it a lot but am a bit disappointed that it only includes 2 1x3 tiles for each color instead of 3. Does anyone know what the complete tile set for the Rubik/MegaHouse one will be like?

I was initially a little disappointed by the same thing, but when you think about it, it would only make relatively trivial cases possible.

Doing 3 1x3 bandages on 1 layer and leaving the rest of the cube unbandaged could be fun.

You could use a an other colour for one of the 1x3 bandages.
