Hey everyone!

It's been quite some time since I posted a new puzzle. I've been crazy busy finishing graduate school, searching for jobs, and trying to adjust to life outside of school. Even so, I found time to finish up two new puzzles. I am proud to present the first:

Eitan's Nebula
a.k.a. Master Eitan's Star - a.k.a. Master FTI

VIDEO
Shapeways: Might happen... But probably not for another month or so...

Eitan's Nebula is a 2-layer version of Eitan's Star. It can also be thought of as a combination of Radiolarians 3 and 4. The edge length is 83mm.

This 743-piece monster is the result of something like 100 hours of work over 2 months. I assembled it over Thanksgiving (i.e. late November), then had to wait for a couple weeks while Shapeways replaced 6 missing parts.

Because some of the stickers would have been really small, I designed it with depressions for tiles. This was the biggest mistake I have made in my 5 1/2 years of puzzle-making. The tile material from Cubesmith was significantly thinner than I was expecting, so I decided to make spacers to go underneath the tiles. That's what's in the hint picture I posted on the forum.
Attachment:
1a Tiling.JPG
1a Tiling.JPG [ 1.57 MiB | Viewed 2995 times ]

First, I super-glued all the spacers onto the puzzle, making the whole thing have a white surface. But before I could finish all those, I had to set the color scheme, since there were only 15 colors of tile available on Cubesmith, and the 5 metallic acrylic sheets I got for the other faces were thick enough not to have to use the spacers. So I had to decide where those colors would go before finishing all the spacers. Once that was settled, I dove into the rest of the stickering with gusto. I watched more White Collar and Community than I care to admit, and my fingers were repeatedly covered in super glue that I picked/sanded off before going to bed each day.

Several times, I considered giving up and just ordering a stickerable version of the puzzle (without recesses for tiles), but I'm so glad I persevered.

This is one of the most insane puzzles I have ever created, and it will probably be the last one of this scale for quite some time. But it is also one of the best I have ever made. See below for more pictures.

 * picks jaw up off floor* I thought Eitan's Star was the hardest puzzle ever, and then this thing. Good luck if you ever scramble it. Wow, I'm just speechless right now. This blows every other puzzle ever out of the water with ease.

Absolutely unbelievable!!! I am in awe at your skills!

It's probably just as well that this will never be available - if it was I would be forced to get one and then it would probably cause my death trying to solve it!

Utter insane madness. And the layers jumble somewhat independently

The tiles and acrylic look sooo vibrant! I bet it feels great to handle.

Now to try to work out a viable solution...

Well he said it won't be available on shapeways and I can't see Eitan making a second one for anyone with the amount of time and effort it took!

You think MF8 will mass produce it? I would love it but think that is never going to happen!

What it says in my post is "Probably not going to happen." There still may be hope. But no promises.

Ah he did say that. I missed that. I even searched for the word "available" but he didn't use it. Well with the amount of work it is to put together and sticker few would buy it. Plus it looks huge and expensive.

And no, MF8 would pretty much never make a puzzle like this.

I can't even begin to imagine the kind of hellish experience solving this might be. I was ready to throw my Eitan's Star against the wall several times when I would near the end of a solve and get thrown off by set-up moves. At least I managed to control myself enough to only throw it at my pillow until I finally solved it and never scrambled it again.

That being said, I still totally want this. Might we see a Master Radio Cube as well? Pwease? :D

WOW!!!

what a wounderful design Eitan. You are a genius. I hope one day puzzle making becomes easier for manufacturers to mass produce these more complex puzzles. I'm a big fan of eitan's star. I love these complex puzzles that look monstrous and take days to solve. Like ryan's gigahexaminx and ben's terahexaminx.
I look forward to the day when these puzzles are mass produced.
Looking forward the video eitan. Well done on a fantastic design. Good luck getting a job.

Really? That's a shame! I loved the experience despite the heart wrenching stress and have scrambled and solved my Eitan's star 5 times now. The only reason I don't do it again is because I have so many other puzzles to play with!

Go on - do it again! You know you want to!

Incredible. Um, that single word doesn't do it justice, let me check a thesaurus. Okay, yeah, I think all of these apply:
Quote:
magnificent, wonderful, marvelous, spectacular, remarkable, phenomenal, prodigious, breathtaking, extraordinary, unbelievable, amazing, stunning, astounding, astonishing, awe-inspiring, staggering, formidable, impressive, supreme, great, awesome, superhuman; fantastic, terrific, tremendous, stupendous, mind-boggling, mind-blowing, jaw-dropping, out of this world, far out; wondrous "an incredible feat of engineering"

Holy!!!! And to think I thought the stuff I worked on was insane. This looks GREAT!!! But stickering is my least favorite part of puzzle making and while the way you did this looks fantastic... it would have driven me crazy. Still its probably the best solution to dealing with those tiny stickers.

If I really wanted to torture you I'd ask for a full scramble and solve video...

Great Job,
Carl

First of all: Wonderful achievement Eitan!
What a dedication!
Good luck in California, too! :) (Little puzzle: How do I know? )

Second: This wonderful thread got somehow distracted by other posts.
I decided to split two new topics off:

E-Cube Designer X's claims

Modern-Day Warrior's contribution that he is working on a cubic version of Eitan's Star

@Burgo: I had decided to do this, when I read your post.

@ECDX: (I'm borrowing this nice abbreviaton from1SAN3  ) You have started so many new topics, where you inform us about your intentions / work in progress.
Why did you feel compelled to hijack this thread for your announcement?

@all: I assure you that there are nicer things to do on Sunday mornings than shuffling around posts

As others have said "Unbelievable!!"
I don't think you'll have any trouble finding an engineering job. If places you apply for don't find your designs relevant or whatever, you probably wouldn't want to work there anyway!

I've just watched the video, and I am beyond words. That is absolutely bloody amazing, it turns so well. My ghast is well and truly flabbered. I will now officially give notice to give up trying to make any more little c****y mods because they will pale into comparison to this amazing beast. Goodbye and goodnight.

Three questions:

1. How many layers are there per axis?
2. What kind of pattern do the cuts make on each face?
3. Is there enough shapeshifting to make a monochrome version a decent challenge?

It has twenty faces, ten axes. There are five layers per axis or two per face with one big middle layer between them. The first cut depth is relatively shallow so it only goes down to a bit past one third of the way down an edge similar to the cut depth on a Megaminx. The first cut is deep enough to cross the center of the triangular faces though so a center piece is formed similarly to how a Starminx forms new centers because the cuts cross the face centers. The second cut is just a bit deeper than the first and crosses the edges right at the midpoint.

On an icosahedron the faces are triangles. The faces have an upside-down triangular pattern in the center identical to the face pattern of a Jings Pyraminx. The outer portion of the face triangle outside of the inner Jings Pyraminx center is two sets of parallel lines that cross each other like an X and form a diamond where they cross. Overall the face pattern looks incredibly complex.

The puzzle jumbles and does cause shapeshifting but normal turns won't shapeshift it. The deeper "master layer" cut can jumble independently of the outer layer cut similar to the Master Curvy Copter cube. I suspect that this puzzle is is similar to the Master Curvy Copter in that the master layer adds a lot more neat jumbling fun just like the Master Curvy Copter adds a lot more over the Helicopter Cube.

This puzzle is huge and insane, but how does it stack up to other huge puzzles?

I calculate the number of distinct positions as:
  • 12 corners, even parity only, constant total twist
  • 20 centers, no orientation
  • 4 different face piece types and 2 chiral pairs of 60 pieces with three identical pieces per face
  • 3 different edge piece types of 60 unique pieces, even parity only
  • 60 duplicate orientations

(((12! / 2) * (5^12 / 5)) * (20! / 2) * (60! / ((3!)^20))^(4 + (2 * 2)) * (60! / 2)^3) / 60

Or 1.229 * 10^808 distinct, reachable positions.

This is more positions than a 21-layer Pyraminx (a Pyraminx has 3 layers).
This is more positions than a Teraminx.
This is more positions than a 15x15x15 Rubik's Cube.

Crazy.

Crazy.

This makes me wonder: what twisty puzzle has the most possible combinations that has ever been physically made? My guess is the ETRT, but I could easily be wrong.

This is without jumbling, right?

This is only counting positions where the puzzle is in its icosahedral shape. Jumbling doesn't allow the puzzle to reach any additional positions in the icosahedral shape but of course, there are many non-icosahedral positions it can reach.

The ETRT is a jumbling-only puzzle. We don't really know how to calculate the number of distinct positions when jumbling is included. Also, I suspect the puzzle has all sorts of crazy orbits which would significantly reduce the total reachable positions.

Finally, Oskar's 17x17x17 didn't sticker the edges or corners so it only has ((24!) / ((4!) ^ 6))^56 positions which is 4.37 * 10^868 so it beats out this puzzle by just a little bit. Yeah 10^60 is a big number but considering the size of these numbers it's not much of a difference.

I would say there are four independent layers per axis. If you count the dependent one there is a total of five. Going from Eitan's Star to Eitan's Nebula is like jumping from the 3x3x3 to the 5x5x5 without ever making the 4x4x4. Though the four layer version of Eitan's star would need a deep cut so I'd guess it would be an even crazier build.

You're right, I can't count. Thank you :-) I've corrected my post.

Dear lord. What have I done?

I SCRAMBLED IT!

The first three pictures are part-way through the scramble. The last one is after the scramble. This puzzle is beautiful.

Maybe Burgo will help you with solving this beast. I suggest reduction, but I'm not the expert here. Either way, you will probably need help with not throwing this against the wall. Especially with those micro pieces. :D

Based on Brandon's numbers for the number of distinct positions and assuming a maximum branching size of 38 76, the god number for this puzzle is > 500 430. I think this means you need to keep scrambling for another 10-20 minutes.

Do you have any mechanism pics? I expect them to look quite strange inside to keep all the tiny pieces from popping.

edit: fixed branching numbers

Hey, I did manage to solve the Master Little Chop. If you can't solve it, send it to me and I'll give it a try.
