Hello everyone, i'd like to show you my latest puzzle; the Cardboard Skewb Cubeoctahedron.

This puzzle was made on somewhat of a whim, after wanting to create a puzzle that appeared to be made of cardboard. I decided on a Skewb based puzzle as it doesn’t have too many pieces and I didn’t want to be overly ambitious with regards to the cardboard panels considering that they would be quite impressionable and prone to wear.

To make the Skewb into a Cubeoctahedron, all eight corner caps and subsequently the ball bearings and springs were removed. Pieces were then covered with appropriately shaped cardboard panels which were attached using superglue. The small circular stickers were made by hole-punching through sheets of adhesive vinyl.

I think using cardboard has given the puzzle quite an organic appearance, which I personally think looks great. The small circular stickers were used so as the emphasis remained on the cardboard elements of the puzzle.

I love this idea! I've had a lack of creativity in the stickering of my Skewb Cuboctahedron.

Actually I quite like the idea of the cardboard. A kind of Raw creativity. I think you cut the cardboard very well & so every piece is beautiful. And the puzzle is nice too!

Oddly attractive!

Although there are a lot more possibilities for this kind of stickering - for example, if you use 4 colors and don't repeat a color on a side, there are exactly 6 ways to color the squares and 8 ways to color the triangles, which matches the number of sides. I'm sure there's at least one way to make them all match up. ;)

Great puzzle!

Many years ago I made some of these. I can't remember which two puzzles I used though. Maybe Skewb and Skewb diamond? Can any one remember which two puzzles went together for these?

I thought that was what it was, but wasn't 100% sure. Thanks!

Thanks for all the nice comments!

I had a feeling something like this would have been done before, but I was surprised when I didn't find anything of relevance during my searches. Do you have pictures of your puzzle Katsmom?

No, before Meffert's rereleased the diamonds they became so valuable I took the puzzles I made apart and sold them
BUT! (there's always a but) if you are patient, I'll dig out a skewb with tiles and make one for your viewing pleasure over the weekend sometime. I can see the skewb diamond, but I think the skewbs are good and burried...

I tried to throw one together once, but for some reason the mechanism of my Skewb Diamond bigger than the Skewb's and they didn't fit together very well.

The cardboard is a very nice touch; I like it. :)

I think you mean Skewb centres and Skewb Diamond centres.

I should think it would work with the new Skewb/diamonds. They all are coming from the same molds. When I made mine it was with the original ones.

Well... sorta. Mechanically, they are edges and corners, but they appear to be centers externally. But I guess you already know that, being the master of Skewb mods.

Yeah, I used a new Skewb Diamond and a Polymorphix era Skewb.

It figures, no skewb with tiles. Oh well. Here you are Ryan. Not at all as pretty as yours, but done just for you.

There you are. No snarky comments about the picture quality-I know it's not good. Bug did something to my camera and it works-but barely. I'm looking to buy a new one, but simply haven't had the time lately.

Oh yes, and Tony-Don't you go stealing my idea and selling it on eBay! I came up with it first

Last bit: the blogspot

Thanks for your nice words about the puzzle Katsmom! I like the Holey Cubeoctahedron, looks nice. I hope you have two tiled Octahedrons though, not sure i'd want to sacrifice one to the cause :P

  I have 4 diamonds! They were purchased ages and ages ago. But no, I only pulled the one apart for the photos and put it back together again right after.

But after seeing your post, I did put in a purchase order so I can do it for real. I like your idea of using the pips so I'm going to steal it! You have been warned!
