Hi!

Master Gear Pyraminx is the second order of my Gear Pyraminx puzzle.

This is a true second order of a gear puzzle - the geared edges roll not only between steady pieces, but most of the way they move between other gears. After 3 turns the active gears turn by 1 tooth (of 7), after 7 turns the puzzle restores its shape, but the middle layer colors shift by 1/3 turn and the top colors shift by 2/3 turn.

Do not confuse this puzzle with Gear Master Pyraminx (does not exist), because it is not a geared version of Master Pyraminx, but master version of Gear Pyraminx :) This puzzle may also be called Gear Triamond as they both have the same pieces if you neglect the edges orientation.

Looks impressive. I love the fact that faces have rotational symmetry, not reflectional one.

This is a beautiful piece of work, I love it. Geared puzzles express movement so brilliantly.

Great puzzle Timur! I hope this is considerably more difficult than the original Gear Pyraminx (even though I haven't solved it physically I think I've worked out the solution), bearing in mind that it now has more interesting cuts and a slightly less regular seven teeth per piece. This is one puzzle I cannot wait to buy and I'm looking forward to when you release it on Shapeways. :)

The face pattern / shape of the stickers lack mirror symmetry. I can't think of any other puzzles like that. Pretty cool.

Also even though this is the master version it still doesn't have an aditional slice you can turn. One tip, one slice, one face, just like the gear pyraminx. Yet it does have the two edge pieces and the center triangle. Actually this is logical in a way that gears obviously have to be engaged so no matter how high the order is there can't be an additional slice to be turned. However if you turn the tip, like in picture 3, only the one line of gears turn. WWEEEIIIRD stuff going on.
But really awesome.

Agreed.... At first I thought that was just a consequence of the gear orientation he chose for the solved state. Looking closer I now don't think that is the case. At least I don't see a way to restore mirror symmetry. Very interesting puzzles. It's one I'd expect Mefferts to be interesting in mass producing down the road.

Not only the face pattern, but the whole unstickered puzzle itself too. This makes it a chiral solid :)

We can imagine a multi-layered construction where all middle layers turn with different speeds. For example, a 4x4x4 cube where you have to turn upper layer by 3 turns and middle layers will turn by 1 and 2 turns.

That's right - the "phase" of the geary pattern was determined by mutual orientation of the adjacent edge pieces. By any other variation the edges would not fit each other.

I misread the title too! When watching the video, I kept thinking; this isn't a geared master pyraminx! Turns out I was right, it isn't!

The chirality makes for some interesting marketing choices: You could keep this one as the absolute original, and mirror the design for Shapeways so this one stays the true original!

I said that Gear Master Pyraminx does not exist, but it is not quite true. It does exist, it just doesn't work.
At first I wanted to desing a geared version of Master Pyraminx, but it failed - due to too small teeth the gears did not always rotate when the top was being turned. For the next version I took bigger teeth (thus there were not so many of them) and I had to shift the cutting surfaces so the result was not a Master Pyraminx anymore.

Isn't that normal: doing a lot of work, then a first fail, and then (after a long wait?) the ultimate success? :solved:

Applause to you! :D

Any chance we could see a video of this version? I'm curious to see exactly how it fails and I'm not up to designing gear puzzles yet myself but I suspect it would be very educational for those that are.
