Scandium is the latest in my Elemental series, and is an extension of the Elemental:Fluorine design much like Sulfur and Argon are extensions of Neon and Beryllium-10.
Where Aluminum Heart was 1/3rd of the extension, Scandium extends all axes.



I have wanted to use the tortoise shell acrylic for some time now and this was a nice excuse. It is transparent, so I had to build it over a white body to have it look right.

I forgot to note: To get the most symmetrical design I made the image just large enough to have the outer circles centered where the outer pieces meet.

I had a slightly smaller version where the inner circle stayed in the area of the pieces, but it meant the outer circles were centered closer.

The advantage of the more symmetrical version is of course the visual balance of many pieces being identical but for rotations, but this is also its disadvantage: There are six pairs of pieces (e.g. the two bottom most pieces) that can swap with the symmetrical design that would have been distinct with the smaller version.

One of the nice things about using the tortoise shell is that otherwise identical pieces can be distinguished based on how I configured the puzzle: The top circle is the lightest, the left bottom darkest and the right bottom is in the middle. So for each pair of "identical" pieces you can distinguish them by how light or dark they are.

Wow is it wooden pieces!? So beautiful! Regret......

It does look a bit like wood, but it is acrylic made to look like the translucent shell of a tortoise.
Here are some pictures of tests I was doing to see how it would look over white acrylic:




The last picture is of a number of materials and the tortoise shell on the bottom. It has the protective film on it so you can't really see how nice it looks.

Nice . Hmm the material doesn't really looks like wood, (like almost), but the dessign on it looks like if it was sculpted in wood tough .
