Hello Puzzlers,

I'm pleased to introduce my latest puzzle, the Rhombic 18. Why 18? Because it has 18 axes of rotation, 12 through the faces of the puzzle, and an additional 6 axes through the four-sided vertexes. The idea for this puzzle came about as I was exploring possibilities for variations of my Ice-9 puzzle. Where Ice-9 is based on a 3-sided prism, Rhombic 18 is based on a four-sided prism. This then turns into a rhombic dodecahedron, giving Rhombic 18 two more turning vertexes than it might otherwise have as a "big brother" to Ice-9. Of course, being a face-turning rhombic dodecahedron at it's core, Rhombic 18 can also jumble.

Watch the video to see Rhombic 18 in action.

You can buy Rhombic 18 at Pitcher Puzzles on Shapeways. However, since it exceeds the Shapeways maximum file size, it must be purchased as two separate models. You can purchase set B here.

I hope you enjoy!
Dave

Wow, it's like a Rua and the four fold DRD corners all in one! David, I am truly impressed. I really wish I could play with one, it would be extremely hard to justify the cost of the puzzle. Nevertheless, it is epicness at it's purest. :)

After watching the video it seems to be rather stiff. Is this just due to the tension, or is it something to do with the tolerances?

Nice, but the colours can only be brutal to sort out in low light (I love Mefferts, except the official mefferts Megaminx has three near-identical shades of green :( ). The grouping idea is sound, but I'd hate to solve it outside on an overcast day.

Colour complaints aside, it's an awesome puzzle and you should be proud. :D

I like the symmetry and those natural twists. Perfect combination!

How lame!
Just a puzzle with hybrid axis system.

Just kidding.
Quite an achievement.

Thank you all for the comments! Here are a the answers to some things:

It is a little bit stiff, but still playable. With so many axes and the sharp angles involved it does need some care in making sure faces are aligned well before turning. The puzzle is lubed (with CRC silicone), but I've got the springs fairly tight in order to help minimize any tendency for pieces to pop.

Thanks, I really struggle with the colors I choose, and I find groupings like this to be more aesthetically pleasing (to my eye) than more random placements. Also, it does help make it easier to distinguish shades of the same color since having them right next to each other (rather than on the other side of the puzzle) makes it easier to see the differences.
