Hi!

I'm proud to announce that Professor Pyraminx is not the highest order Pyraminx ever built anymore. Please meet my Royal Pyraminx with 6 turning layers.

Having 5 different cuts, this is the most complicated design I have ever created. I mean not only the mechanism, but also the cuts pattern - there are 25 points on each face where four spherical surfaces exactly intersect each other (these are either 3 cuts and 1 face surface, or 2 cuts and 2 faces). But the mechanism itself is not unbeleivably complex - beside 86 outer (stickered) pieces, there are only 12 internal (invisible) pieces.

Because the pillowness degree of Professor Pyraminx was not enough to let all the pieces stay in place when the layers are being turned, Royal Pyraminx has to be more pillowed. Still it is slightly less pillowed than a Releaux Tetrahedron.

As you can see on the video, the turning is very nice (at least for such a high order puzzle):

Wow, from the video it looks unbelievably smooth! It's amazing that such a puzzle can even fuction.
P.S. I spy a Trignis and an FTO somewhere in that thing :wink:

You have single-handedly increased the order of the classic Pyraminx (3 -> 4, 5, and now 6!). I did create an Order 2 Junior Pyraminx mod, but it is a trivial puzzle by anystrech of the imagination....

How much does it cost to print this bad boy?

I believe there are a few others that have made it to what you are calling order 4. I think the first was Katsuhiko Okamoto back in 2006. But beyond that you may very well be correct.

Hmmm... how many orders could you in principle go to with a Releaux Tetrahedron? I was just looking at the image you posted some time ago...

And hoping this whole family could have the same degree of pillowedness someday. Just wondering if you should have started with the Releaux Tetrahedron as the shape for these. I guess you have to draw a line somewhere...

In all honestly, this is now one of my favourite builds of all time, the wings and such holding the pieces in must be incredibly thin!

This is Royal. The Elite Pyraminx is the same as the Professor Pyraminx. It goes Master, Elite (or Professor in this case), Royal, Imperial (I think), and so on.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing yesterday. 5.1.13 is the closest to this. I was trying to estimate a reasonable lower bound on the number of moves needed to solve it. My guess is about 150.

If I recall, there was some kind of problem with the stability of the other pyraminxes. I remember seeing a picture of models for a pillowed master pyraminx and a pillowed pyraminx, but I can't remember where.

Anyway, very nice puzzle Timur! The smoothness looks incredible!

Maybe 1-2 more. It is not easy to tell - at first you have to sketch all the cuts, cut it (even without mech), turn it by 60° and see how it looks. Anyway, a tetrahedron can be more pillowed than the Releaux, so in principle you can increase the number of layers on and on - and finally end up with a sphere that can bear anything.

I'm not a fan of too much pillowedness - sometimes it's just conscious necessity. So I don't think I would make a Releaux Master or Professor Pyraminx just to match the shape of the next order puzzle.

I agree with Luke, Professor is the same as Elite. Imperial Pyraminx could have been the next after the Royal one, but this is the name of unpainted Jade Pyraminx already.

Who knows? If it's like "minx", then Pyraminxes, if it's like "lynx", then plural is Pyraminx.
