I have created a sticker mod for the 4x4x4 to turn it into a Sudoku. It is very rough at the moment, it is just done with masking tape, i am planning on doing a much better job.

The numbers 1 to 16 must all appear once, and only once on each face and layer of the cube. So all six faces and all 12 layers (4 in each of the X, Y and Z directions) contain the numbers 1 to 16.

I have included 2 photos in solved state. 2 photos displaying the u layer and 2 n a scrambled state.

What do people think, is anyone interested in a proper sticker pattern.

A similar design that never attracted much attention... with standard hexadecimal numerals 0,1,2,...,9,A,B,...,E,F.

Here is my design of what I named Sudokube4, that I did on Feb/2010, but with colors instead of numbers:

I have a program to generate random 4x4x4 SudoKube puzzles.
If you are given a maximally random puzzle (bottom right), without knowledge
of the corresponding solved state, it seems nearly impossible to figure out the solution...

I did my 4x4x4 Sudoku Cube using colors back in October 2008. viewtopic.php?f=15&t=11306

I just remembered that Volitar Prime did this before me, but didn't know the correct topic.
And mine I did in 2010 without knowing this was made before. I just figured out that the only way to make a sudokube without number orientations is with different colors.
But Thanks for the reference, Volitar.

Come on you guys don't start fighting over dates...! :D

this idea goes back at least to 2006 :

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4174&p=28168&hilit=sudokube#p28168

and I am pretty sure, it goes back even further then that but couldn't trace it...
It comes back every year or so, but nobody seem to care about it very much...
I know that the idea of putting a sudoku on a 4x4x4 (non twisty) cube is much older.

I still think it is a very pretty (twisty) puzzle, but it is either too easy (if you know the solved configuration)
or too hard (if you don't)... and so far has attracted very little interest.
At some point Uwe Meffèrt agreed to produce stickers for this but ultimately it feel between the cracks
because very few people were interested in buying those...

Hi everybody!
I thought I was an inventor, but never mind, i'm pleased others had the same idea.
You can visit my website http://sudokube.fr (EN version coming soon) where I show all the possibilities of sudokubes I made : cube, tetraedirc, sphere, rubik, paper, app...
Image.
Enjoy!

PS: I'll be present to the International Game Festival in Cannes (FR) on February.

I filed my Qubami patent (which includes 4x4x4 sudoku variants) in January 2006, after developing the idea and writing the application from mid-2005 (when sudoku reached its peak in the UK). I'm not aware of anything similar before then, based on a full prior art search at the time, but I may be wrong...

I did make a prototype 4x4 version of Qubami, but decided it looked too complicated and would put a lot of people off, so I'm not surprised the 4x4 sudoku that was produced never took off.

Still, it's good to see all ideas getting made in physical form at least once. :D

This looks very good. And the animation explains it beautifully too.

I really like the pyraminx variation. It is probably solvable even if you don't know the initial (solved) configuration. And that's a lot better than the 4x4x4 version which is a real nightmare if you don't know the initial (solved) state...

Well done !

You know, using a 4x4 multicube (the Crazy 4x4 I) you could make a "true" 3D sudoku by coloring cubies, instead of just coloring the faces...

Has anybody ever actually managed to solve one of these 4x4x4 sudoku puzzles without already knowing the solved state??

PS. I agree, the pyramid version (and animation) looks great! :D

In general would a 4x4x4 sudoku puzzles just have 1 unique solution? Is it possible for them to have more then one?
