Makarov's / Mixup / Hedgehog Cube (magnets)

Hello,

I would like to present my new puzzle - Makarov's / Mixup / Hedgehog Cube with
magnets. Even mechanical implementation is not too complex, I decided to create
Makarov's / Mixup / Hedgehog Cube with magnets. 3D model of the cube for
shapeways was created by Evgeniy Grigoriev (aka grigr), assistance with shipment
to Saint-Petersburg by Alexey Gurov (aka Tesseract750).

You need 40 mm sphere and
(4+3) * 6 = 42 magnets with 6 x 2 mm size (diameter x width).

Finally I understand how this puzzle works! Very clever! And simple!

Its very easy to make this with out magnets!

So you would just need a 2x2x2 mech inside instead of the sphere right to make magnets superflous and hold the puzzle together right?

Yes, you are right. You may remove sphere and magnets, and use 2x2x2 cube as internal mechanism.

Would it be possible to scale it down to the size of a ping pong ball? I have a 28mm ball but no 40mm :lol:

Wow. That's really good, considering it's a magnetic mechanism. Good work! I love it even more now that it's stickered.

Anyone here up on the history of the Mixup Cube? If these questions are answered in that article could someone that can read it, translate it?

(1) Was Sergey Makarov's Cube a one-of-a-kind, or was it produced in some small volume? I certainly wasn't aware of it till Oskar made his.
(2) What mech did it use? Same as Oskar's or something completely different?
(3) What was it's name? I believe Oskar is the one that gave it the name Mixup Cube but did Sergey Makarov have a name for it?
(4) Is Sergey Makarov still in the puzzling community today? Has he made any other puzzles?

Just quite curious....

Carl, here's what I know:

(1) Sergey Makarov's cube was one of a kind. There might have been others but only handmade. They had not been mass produced. Also, see (2).
(2) The mechanism was published in his patent, as well as in a book that came out at a much later time. Please see this post, and this post. I remember this very well as I was a subscriber of the magazine mentioned there, and bought the book later.
(3) It was just Makarov's cube.
(4) No, I don't think so. I've tried to locate him as well, but was unable to.
