Hey everyone! I want to start off by saying I know this isn't really a puzzle but it is something I designed. I didn't want to put it in the off topic section because I figured it wouldn't get as much attention as I wanted. If a moderator feels the need to move it there, please feel free to, and I apologize.

Anyway! I've designed a locket for my girlfriend for Christmas. It's based on the concept of the one from the movie The Illusionist. It's not quite as cool as that one, but it's not a bad attempt. It was printed in WSF and I used wood stain to get the nice color :)

VIDEO

Here are some pictures!

The same inscription is also on the bottom of the locket.

This is the closed state. The lids are locked onto the body.

The locket turns across the middle cut in the direction of the arrows...

...and as you likely guessed, becomes a heart. The inscription is still there and the lids are now unlocked from the body.

The lids each have a little cutout in them through which an arm (in the next picture) can move in and out as the locket turns. This locks and unlocks the lids.

That curved extension is the locking mechanism. There is one on the other lobe as well. The pink stuff is some tissue paper enclosing a pair of earrings I bought for my girlfriend.

I hope you guys like it. I'm sorry if it bothers people that I posted this in a puzzle forum. I just wanted some feedback about the design.

Is it possible to put it on a chain for her? To make it a 'real' locket?

It looks lovely! What a thoughtful gift!

The stain looks very nice, I actually thought it was wood at first glance.
Very nice design. I love how this can open, and it has a very clever locking mech.
I think you should put it up for sale on shapeways (if she doesn't mind  ), it's significantly different from the other, and I know that I would love to buy one!

I know I was very surprised at how well the stain took to the plastic. And sorry, no sale. She wants hers to be the only one :P

And Rox, she hates necklaces, so I figured it would be best to stay away from the chain

what do you mean turn down?

And I've seen them. But most of them use magnets and I wanted it to be all mechanical :) Plus you can actually fit something other than a photo in this one.

Very thoughtful and romantic. But why spoil this special personal gesture with "Baamonde Productions" if you will only ever make one of these? You may as well have slapped a sticker on it saying "churned out by their millions in Chinese sweatshops".

Great idea! Nice puzzle !
Can it turn a hole circle, or half a circle 180 degree ?
It turns both clockwise and counterclockwise or just one direction ?

Any way it is a great work !

It only turns 180 degrees in one direction to open it. To close, it turns 180 degrees in the opposite direction.

And with my Baamonde Productions tag, I've made her something else before, and she thought it was awesome that I had my name designed into it, so I figured I'd do it again :)

I might as well add this to the list. After all, a 1x1x2 is in fact a puzzle, and it can be considered a disassembly puzzle as well, even though the arrow clearly demonstrates how it opens.

Ah, now it makes sense, thanks, and sorry if my first message came across bad.

Yes, and in fact it's a 1x1x2 shapeshifter! :D

Nope even better. It's a 1x1x2 jumbler! When it turns, it bandages and unbandages the disassembly moves.

Beautiful and very thoughtful design. It is simple because it *has* to be,
and it is elegant because of the ingenious shape shifting.

Well done!

:)
