Hey fellow puzzlers!!

Finally, after three versions here it is!!

It is 24 mm to an edge like a mini eastsheen 2x2. There is sanding to be done on the core needed to make it a perfect puzzle, so I won't sell it on shapeways for 30$ but directly assembled and stickered for 40$ + shipping. I will make very minor changes on the core of the choppers bought buy other people and if one turns out perfect I will sell it on shapeways. But this is not sure as you have to glue core parts together...

Anyways here is the Chopper evolution:

V1: Face offset: -0.1mm (each face) Fillets: none Problems: Much too loose, catching all the time, popping all the time (every five turns approximately)

V2: Face offset: -0.1 (each face) Fillets: 0.5mm mech 1mm outside Problems: Even worse than V1, all the pieces fall apart during a turn

V3: Face offset: 0 mm Fillets: 0.5mm mech 1mm outside Problems: none :)
Fingertricks do work!!!!

I prototyped the v3 thanks to Luke, as he agreed to trade one for an original FTO (Frank's)

Turning is perfect, but it doesn't cut corners much (slightly though), and it is surprisingly amazing for it's size.

Anyways, enjoy the pictures!

Video!
Fully assembled and stickered puzzles only for 40$ + shipping directly from me

Cheers,

Greg :D

Awesome! I can't wait to get it. I can't believe you went through with this. Did you know that this was a 99? Oh well, I guess I can give up my FTO for this. :)

awesome! Congratulations on getting it improved so much! Good thing you kept at it!

Maybe I'll get one of these some time. I'd like to have a collection of only mini puzzles :)

You present 99 is a 99 itself  Anyways I'm happy I got through with this project! If you don't want it say so

@ Sigurd: If you want a collection of mini puzzles you're diefinitely going to get it, as I'm not done with mini's

@ Luke: want a signature on it?

Ah, so you noticed my double 99 input there.

Don't take this the wrong way, but all the puzzles I have that are signed aren't usable due to the signatures. And I would love to play with this, so I'm happy just the way it is.

Many thanks Greg!

Awesome! Perhaps such a mechanism could be adapted for smaller 24 Cubes? :)

(EDIT: Or any of the other edge turning cubes, it seems like a lot of people forget those...)

I noticed the title of your post was "Luke's mini chopper" are you jealous?

@ Kapusta: I'd like to make a mini Curvy Copter, but I am funded by my puzzle sales, so I can't make it, because I can't sell it :( Maybe I'll make some shelled heli's (ex: Quad X if I get authorisation or fisher quad X (UMC edge 135) or even a 24  )

And I had forgotten something: Fingertricking works :)

Well, it is mine, isn't it? Without me you wouldn't have printed it in the first place.

I agree that more mini puzzles need to be made. A mini Curvy Copter would be awesome! TomZ, please let him! :D

My word does not make any difference, but I will speak it anyway.
A puzzle like the Quad X is obvious. Just like an 8x8x8 is or Gigaminx or Master Skewb or Royal Octahedron or the Chopasaurus.
I can see why Tony can be against people copying his creations like Mental Block and Container, because they are not obvious.
So in my book you, Greg, should just go ahead and make the "Quad X"/ Deeper Cut Edge Turn Cube.
This discussion should have its own thread. I would start it but dont know what to call it :)

I swear, I read this title as 'RFG's Mini Chopper 24 cube'... XD
congratulations on this build! I really love your mini puzzles. They show how far you can go with this idea :D
As for future puzzles, I don't think the Quad-x would be a very good idea; Even on the large version, Drewseph said that the edges were really squishy. I'd hate to think what that means on a mini version. I think you should try the Curvy Copter Plus first :D (with permission from TomZ, of course.)
Once again, wonderful job!
keep up the great work,
sj

Tom refuses to let me copy any of his puzzles, and therefore I won't, but I think I would make a working Deep cut mini puzzle. I'll try some soon enough, but I have two puzzles to build first (after the one that's coming soon.

remember you are free to copy any puzzle for your own personal use. As long as you dont sell it to anybody you are fine :)

That's the problem... I can't fund what I can't sell and I hate that

What do you mean Sigurd by: I can't wait to fund those projects?

Because If you wish I can make a deal:

You prototype and I remove markup (and trust me sometimes (for big puzzles) that gets REALLY interesting  )

Anyways tell me what you think of it. Anyways back on topic, sort of:

Sorry the title was misleading monopoly... Wamybe one day it won't be, and it'll really be a heli + 24 haha

This is becoming a KO thread... I haven't seen much new that hasn't been said before so please do read up on previous topics before taking this thread off topic.

Just to close this open issue I will repeat a relevant point: "Personal use" may be logical, but once you pay Shapeways to print a design you are complicating this by injecting a purchase. You are asking them to sell someone's copied design.

Where that design is patented you are violating their policies and could get them in trouble (i.e. mini-V7). If the design isn't patented they may be fine with it but you should consider if this upholds the original designer's request.

Otherwise someone could copy a design and put it on Shapeways with no mark up. By your logic everyone can then print their own for personal use and you aren't selling someone else's design but have still done them a large disservice by killing their market for their own puzzle.

I think we all have seen that few puzzles get patented and those that do are pirated nonetheless. So it should be clear that what can be done and what should be done are far apart. Therefore choose your actions based on what you think is right and respectful.

Dave

To be honest, I thought the buyers of a mini chopper already had a helicoptr cube, as the mini choper costs less, so it wouldn't harm their sales, but I am closing the offers now and waiting from an answer of a PM I sent. Update will come when I recieve the PM.

EDIT: Who is the original creator? I don't jnow where to send the PM

Just to be clear I wasn't commenting on whether or not your creation is appropriate or inappropriate, just on the topic of "personal copies".

The first puzzle of this type was the Bevel Cube by Okamoto. It was independently created by Adam Cowan as the Helicopter cube. See Adam's thread about it here and Okamoto's post in Adam's thread is here. Note the birth of "jumbling" is just a post or two down from that. For those that don't read the forum backwards in time, this is the sort of post you missing.

Jason Smith (io, on the forum) worked with Adam to mass produce his design, and any mass produced copies of this design would be considered KO. Adam has stated that he does not approve of unauthorized mass productions of his designs. Perhaps your puzzle uses a different design, but either way the most polite way to proceed would be talk to Adam and / or Jason. It seems perhaps you already have :)

First, let me congratulate you on a sweet mini version of a very beloved puzzle. Always a cool thing. I've fallen behind the times and haven't gotten a helicopter cube but I want one. Anyone know if Adam and Jason are still selling these?

Second let me just thank Dave for being the level headed mod we all love and admire (mod crush). Seriously, thanks for keeping these sorts of discussions on track and being logical and reasonable.
