Here is the puzzle I built during this summer and which won the Puzzle Building Event at Euro 2010. It was originally designed for the DCD2010, but I managed to finish it in time for Euro too. Thanks to Olivér Nagy for the stickers. I had to sticker it Thursday night before competition: 2.5hours of stickering 750 small pieces. Here is the description of the puzzle. Quote: THE OCTOPUS
This puzzle is a modification of a Teraminx. The idea was inspired by Tony Fisher’s V-Sculpture, which was a similar modification of a V Cube 7. On this puzzle, I also decided to extend the centers of the Teraminx, to enhence it’s look. I didn't expected, but doing this confused even more the solver, because nobody knew actually which corner was rotating and which not, without analyzing the puzzle a bit.
It has 30 faces – maybe the puzzle with the most faces ever made, 750 stickers and of course 12 rotational axes. Due to the high costs and inconvenience to get 30 different colors, I decided to sticker it with only 15 colours x2. So, it’s even more difficult to solve and should have parity too. The puzzle was built during the summer 2010 and involved a tremendous amount of work, due to the small pieces it has.
The main steps were: - Sculpting all the 30 borders of the Teraminx faces with a Dremel. Very careful not to go too deep. - Fill every single piece with Miliput Black (Epoxy). - Extend the centers. - Polish and sand the puzzle several times. - Applying the 750 stickers! = 30face x 25 stck./face.
The puzzle was prepared initially for the Dutch Cube Day 2010 (16 Oct.), so I had to hurry a bit up with it’s finnishing to get it ready also for Euro2010 (1 Oct.), in Budapest. This is a unique puzzle and I don’t think I will ever build something like this again.
I hope you enjoy it.

With Olivér Nagy and Jean Louis Mathieu, 2 very nice persons. Hope you like it!

Unbelievable! The first teraminx mod, and it's something as amazing as this!

WOW. That's just incredible. Can you post either a video or some pictures of it mid-turn? (or both!)
Did you do all of the modding by hand? Or did you make molds and cast? What kind of teraminx did you mod it from?

I have to say that I don't usually like puzzles with lots of different colours or lots of different sticker shapes and sizes, but the overall shape and symmetry of this is beautiful - nice work!

I was one of the first to try and turn this puzzle and I was amazed. It turns smooth, but has some minor lockups, maybe I was too nervous to break anything. A heavy puzzle but VERY beautiful, and very well crafted.
Nice to see it online here.
Also nice meeting you Friday night in the mall.
Great puzzle and congrats on your win.

I really, really appreciate your words everybody! I wasn't expecting to get impress that much. You know...when you're building a puzzle you always know every imperfection and think it's not that great, but everybody seemed to be quite amazed by it. I'm very happy. pirsquared wrote: WOW. What kind of teraminx did you mod it from? -π (Eitan) I will post a video tomorrow or these days. The turning is quite good and the puzzle is also quite resistant. Too bad people were to shy forcing it a bit. It doesn't pop and it is ok if you force it a bit. It has some "starting" friction, but if the movement is already started then it turns very well. Everything is hand made. No molds. The extensions are made by hand from Miliput Black. I used a c4u teraminx. Doubleyou wrote: I want to know what brand of teraminx too! I really really hope it's not the C4U one.. Hmmm..why? Because it has smaller pieces and it's difficult to work with them or because you don't like those? Doubleyou wrote: now let's see a scrambled photo Oooh, no...at least not yet. I don't think I have time to solve it again until DCD2010. I might write a scramble though, and then reverse it. But just a short one. Thank you Henrik for your feedback and thanks to everybody again. It's important for me. If you have any other questions I'm here to answer. As a side observation, almost everybody who saw this live said something like "omg, he risked to ruin a teraminx!"

so it is built from a C4U Teraminx. Well I didnt hope for it because turning is really that much worse than the Mf8 one. so yea..

I don't recall giving anyone permission to transform a Teraminx before I got round to it! Great puzzle. Always nice to see hand made stuff. Looking forward to seeing it at DCD2010.

It was a great pleasure to make stickers for your puzzle! And I was glad that the outcome was so nice! I was amazed how easily it turns, and how beautiful it is! You deserved the 1st place! I'm a little bit sorry, because at the competition we only had a few puzzles, but if we had 2-3 times more I'm sure still you won it!

Thanks everybody! PuzzleMaster6262 wrote: Really amazing! I love how the stickers create false pieces. I don't really know what you mean by false pieces. There is actually no false piece and the puzzle is fully functional . Every piece you see, moves. I was very happy to have Tony and others inspect it at DCD.
