Hi Twisty Puzzles fans,

Nested Cube is a Hollow-Cube-style puzzle with a hollow spherical 2x2x2 turning inside a hollow 2x2x2. At two places, a corner of the inner 2x2x2 is connected to a corner two the outer 2x2x2. So some sides of the inner 2x2x2 can turn independently of the outer 2x2x2, but other not. I would call this "inside-out bandaging".

(Not so) surprisingly, the concept of inside-out bandaging was independently developed by Katsuhiko Okamoto as well. Okamoto built an octahedrally-modded cubic 3x3x3 inside his famous Void Cube. He connected three inner edges to three outer edges, while the other edges turn independently. The result is Okamoto's recent Kepler Cube.

So, it's safe to say this is something like the nightmare cube, all moves look possible but they're not?

Very nice design though.

There is an indirect relationship. The brilliant Nightmare Cube has some hidden bandaging inside, which makes it a logistic nightmare to solve. On the other hand, there is nothing hidden about the inside-out bandaging of the Nested Cube.

If there's only one bandage point and it's just 2 2x2x2, wouldn't it just behave like one of these?

There are two of such bandaging points in Nested Cube.

Solves like a 4x4x4 with two bandaged blocks of size 2x2x2 and removed edges and faces.

Oops. Somehow I didn't notice that 2nd bandage, sorry.
Still wouldn't be too bad to solve. Get the two bandages next to each other, "solve" the inner cube to match the outer, then solve the outer. Hope I didn't miss anything else

Yes, independently, both Okamoto and I came up with the idea of a twisty puzzle within a twisty puzzle, where some of the pieces of the outer puzzle are connected (bandaged?) to some of the pieces of the inner puzzle.

Oskar's Nested Cube is a hollow 2x2x2 inside a a hollow 2x2x2, with two corners inside-out bandaged.

Okamoto's Kepler Cube is a solid 3x3x3 modded into an octahedron inside a void 3x3x3, with three edges connected.

It is fascinating how two people come up with the same concept, and turn it into two quite different puzzles.

Didn't Hidetoshi make a Octagon or something within a Void Cube?

He put a mini cube inside a void cube.
