A while back Andrew contacted me about making a mini 5x5x5. He did not want to print his design himself because it would infringe one the V-Cube patent. In Europe patent laws are more relaxed regarding personal use so I got it printed instead.

So I present, the world's smallest, fully functional 5x5x5 cube, just 35mm on an edge.

When I received the parts from Shapeways it simply didn't work. Closer inspection of the parts revealed imperfections. Shapeways agreed they did something wrong and after 3 reprints and some tweaking of the printer configuration they got it to work. Many thanks to them for the great service.

Because stickers would never adhere given the small surface area I coloured each square using a marker. I then finished it off with clear spray paint. It worked well, but the squares are a bit botched. Drawing on SLS is like drawing on paper towels.
The puzzle itself works reasonably well. It's pretty stiff but doesn't pop that often. A video will come later.

and with a ruler.
It is 45mm but an image would make this point even more clear.

And I guess the next step would be the tiny 4x4x4. I'm going to have a challenge if I want to make a smaller 5x5x5.

I love these size variations. Great work. Couldn't you super glue the stickers on? If it's too porous you could seal it first.

Shapeways uses Nylon 11 polyamide for SLS. Super glue (cyanoacrylate) doesn't bond to nylon (polyamide).

The colors may look a little coarse, but they're pretty and permanent. On such a small scale it's probably better that it doesn't have stickers so the user is always touching the puzzle itself.

I tried the mini 5x5 at Benelux Open this last weekend.
I was so cute and so small, I agree that it is very stiff and hard to turn.

I would not try to scramble it since it might take me more than an hour to solve.

Great job, :D

It's probably due to the porisity, but CA bonds perfectly well to SLS parts.
I think getting stickers to stay on would have been possible but I like to try out something new.

Didn't see that. Read it to make sure I don't post something useless and missed that.

I had a longish phone conversation with one of the 3d printing vendors about getting SLS prints awhile back. He let me know that when they offer sealed or non-sealed SLS, the difference is only that the sealed ones are coated with cyanoacrylate, or SuperGlue! Also, I have been using superglue for some critical parts on my recent puzzles in SLS nylon with no trouble as of yet, and the bond seems very good. Must be the porosity, as Tom says.

WTH? I wanted to try out a mini 5x5, but that's a bit TOO small!

Great job, and it's cool that it works. I wonder if it's stable enough to do a full solve on. It looks like 7mm cubies, which is equivalent to a 21mm 3x3... pretty ridiculous. I want one :p
