More seriously... this puzzle is missing two types of pieces, not just the corner. I look a peek at Gelatinbrain and it appears not to offer the shallowest Face-Turn Icosahedron as a puzzle. This one is close.

Imagine the cuts just a bit shallower and you'd see the face centers this Radiolarian has. In addition to missing the corner its also missing the wings that surround it. Without those pieces there is nothing to hold the corner and those wings I suspect would significantly increase the complexity of the mechanism. I think the curved cuts allow those pieces to be ignored and thus we have this great puzzle. It works and I don't consider it a cheat... its no different than making a 4x4x4 that ignors the inner 2x2x2.

This is a truly fantastic puzzle! The cuts make it very pleasing to the eyes and lack of corners is surprisingly attractive! I can't believe the puzzle functions without them!

This just made my day! I spent 3 or 4 hours last weekend just trying to make this in Solidworks, after the comment made by ndgamer4life last week (I can't remember exactly where he said this...)
