OHHHHO Yes. When I read The first sentence of your post and saw the picture I just though "Gimme the Skewb 2x2, baby come on." And there it is. Awesome. I know the title of the hole topic says it already but when there's a new topic in the "New puzzles" section, I somtimes tend to klick and then see, because I am to excited.

Looks great! This is one of the few puzzles that I've avoided solving on Gelatinbrain in the hope that I might own a physical version one day. The third photo is intriguing, too. Is a jumbling move possible at the midpoint of a Skewb turn?

That's great! You may remember, I tried to do this last year, using the skewb mechanism attached to the corners of an inner 2x2, but I never got it working.
I alluded to this a few days ago in the "hints of puzzles" thread, and just yesterday, I printed master parts for a magnetic version of this puzzle! I will be making it over winter break. (Which starts in a week and a half. I have very little time for puzzle-building during finals week!)
I can't wait to see a video!
-Ï€ (Eitan)
PS. When I made my (failed) version of this puzzle, I called it the "Skew-by-2". I think this is a very fitting name for the puzzle.

I remember taking a peek at this a while back and thinking there wouldn't be any jumbling as you couldn't start a 2x2x2 turn until a Skewb turn was completed and vice-versa. However this looks like you could start another Skewb type turn in the middle of a Skewb type turn. Very interesting... I can't wait to see the video. Carl

Leslie Why not skewb + Dino cube first? I'd know I'd like to see that first wouldn't you? I'm a bit surprised coz it appears a 4 layered(6 layers if small corner rotates) skewb is enough to do this? Agree with you frankly, Darren. They should come in steps. Leslie

Taking the 222, Skewb, Dino, Heli, and Little Chop as the five "elementary" cubic puzzles, how many of the 10 order-2 combinations have been made?
Dino 222 - Check, Super X Dino Skewb - ??? Dino Heli - ??? Dino Chop - ??? Skewb-by-2 - Check, This puzzle Skewb heli - ??? Skewb Chop - ??? Heli-by-2 - ??? Heli Chop - ??? 222 Chop - ???
Also, anyone have any idea how many three-puzzle combinations there would be?
Still, I think the Dino-Heli Skewb-by-2 Chop would the true Holy Grail of puzzles.

Quote: Also, anyone have any idea how many three-puzzle combinations there would be? 10, one for each of the '2' combinations you posted, but instead combining the 3 unused puzzles. However, I disagree with your 5 elementary puzzles. The Little Chop is essentially a deep cut Helicopter, and the Skewb a deep cut Dino. Regardless, those combinations would get pretty wild. EDIT: As long as I'm posting in this forum I should add that Adam's puzzle it spectacular. I hope to see one in person someday.

I wasn't online yesterday and now there are already two incredible new puzzles. Being a Skewb fan and seeing this combined with a 2x2x2 is breathtaking. So I hope this puzzle will be available for buying.
Please let me know!

I love this puzzle. I wrote a solution for it a while ago, it was on the website in my signature until geocities moved or something. Definitely much harder than the SuperX. I've been calling it the SuperO (to contrast with the SuperX), but "Skew-by-2" is a bit catchier. (Darren, I saw your post after I typed this all out) Building it is also not nearly so straightforard as the SuperX. In my estimate, you have to use a skewb as a core instead of a 3x3/2x2, and the outer 2x2 isn't so totally straightfoward either. I'm assuming it's a layered mech like the SuperX. He very well could've come up with something completely different and innovative. Great job! Jeffery Mewtamer wrote: Taking the 222, Skewb, Dino, Heli, and Little Chop as the five "elementary" cubic puzzles, how many of the 10 order-2 combinations have been made?

Still, I think the Dino-Heli Skewb-by-2 Chop would the true Holy Grail of puzzles. I don't want to jump on this too hard or anything but I'm really interested in this subject and looked into it pretty extensively a while back. It turns out there are 8 fundamental (or "elementary") cubes. The other 3 are the cubical versions of the Rua and Toru, and the trivial shallow-cutvertex turning cube. However there are two interesting groups within the puzzles you listed. They are: Super X, Skew-by-2, Vestar (Heli+Dino) and Little Chop + 2x2x2 are "uniform" (they have all congruent stickers and are not "strong") 2x2x2+Heli, Dino+Chop, Heli+ Skewb are "strong hybrids", meaning they are indistinguishable from one of their parent puzzles until you turn them. Ok, now I will shut up and let you all admire this awesome build! P.S. (B- R- UFR+ R+ B+) D+ (B- R- UFR- R+ B+) D-

It turns out there are 8 fundamental (or "elementary") cubes. The other 3 are the cubical versions of the Rua and Toru, and the trivial shallow-cutvertex turning cube. Hmmm... These are the cubical version of Rau and Toru I assume? http://users.skynet.be/gelatinbrain/Applets/Magic%20Polyhedra/hexa_e1.htmhttp://users.skynet.be/gelatinbrain/Applets/Magic%20Polyhedra/hexa_e2.htmPersonally I think of just the 2x2x2, Skewb, and Little Chop as the "elementary" cubes. Once you start adding the next higher order, as the rest are since they all have two cut planes per axis of rotation instead of just one, shouldn't you then also add the 3x3x3 and the Master Skewb to that list? I would also call those the canonical elementary cubes. I don't see the logic to adding in the helicopter and dino without also adding the 3x3x3.

Quote: I would also call those the canonical elementary cubes. I don't see the logic to adding in the helicopter and dino without also adding the 3x3x3. The short answer is that the helicopter and dino contain completely different set of pieces while the 3x3x3 is just a higher order 2x2x2. The three you consider are the deep-cut fundamentals. The long answer of why there are eight fundamentals is because with these eight you can form (and therefore, classify) all cubic non-shapeshifting (exlcuding jumbling) puzzles with planar cuts, through ordering, combination and hybridization. For example the skewb-by-2 is Cube FA2VC2 (face-turning, type A, 2nd order + vertex-turning, type C, 2nd order) Of course I'm far from authoritative on this subject, but I did write an essay on it a while back which I posted in the GelatinBrain thread. In the interest of not hijacking this thread too badly, here is a link to the correct page of that thread. The essay is an attachment. viewtopic.php?f=8&t=7830&p=138786

Wow, thats a big list to cover! Time to make it smaller! w w w.photobucket.com/albums/a274/AceoSpades456/hc2x2v2.jpg

I too like this topic and don't want to hijack this thread so I'll be starting one called "Classification of the Cubes" to talk about your very nice essay. Thanks, Carl P.S. Here is the thread I just started. http://twistypuzzles.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&p=190206

in the third picture, it almost appears that the puzzle is jumbleable from a half skewb turn, by another skewb turn. In the picture it would be the top, forward, right corner.
