I must confess that I've already calmed down to finally see it working, do you? :) Sorry for a long wait.

There are some black parts, it's just for test of solid dyeing in replacement of stickering which is not quite suitable for small facelets.

Some background info

Someday in April this year when I was wandering in a local bookstore, an impressive puzzle caught my eyes firmly. It's a cube with hundreds of facelets, V7.

How did they make it? Filled up with wonders, I did a lot of searches when I was back in home. Finally, the patent of Mr. Verdes came into my sight. Can you imagine the feeling when I saw the file? Incredible! So much appreciations go to Mr. Verdes!

mf8 & TP are essentially two major forums when I was searching for related key words. With the information therein, I was able to catch a glimpse of the latest technologies behind those big assemblies as well as flushes of inspiring thoughts and comments. They simply became my daily readings, which finally led me to the 12x12x12 project.

The whole project starts from the well-known 'hidden layer' which I thought was unnecessary. Although I'm not explaining the detailed strategy to achieve a new mechanism(as most designers do), it is true that careful investigations of Mr. Verdes' file along with some other patent files were carried out. Huge thanks to Mr. Verdes as well as his excellent designs.

Another goal of this project is to explore the area of extra-high order cubes, esp popping & alignment issues. By 'extra-high order' I mean when layers increase above 10. Every intermediate rotational layer will contain more than 30 parts. If a small gap is allowed for each part, then there's a possibility that there can be a gap of 30 times larger than normal when the layer is squeezed in one direction.

The kick off decision was made by the fact that I saw very few attemps to make normal cubes of higher order in both of the forums. I didn't know why since there were so many odd shapes being tried out.

It has been more than 6 months since this 12th cube was designed. Although I prefer theoretical investigations, I felt it necessary to make it real. Well, "have to be made".

I love it.

Enjoy!

Leslie

Good grief! This is crazy! I can't believe a cube of this size actually exists! But I have a few questions:
1) Will you be selling this version?
2) When will be able to see the insides?
3) Does the cube handle okay?
4) Will you be making better versions?

I always said that beyond 7x7 and I wouldn't really be interested, but I have to admit, a huge part of me wants one.

Excellent work and I'm curious as your mechanism without a hidden layer.

Simply amazing, I really do want one of these! It doesn't really matter about the puzzles inbetween, I just want the extremes of each cube series, and this is extreme as it gets!

This is truly phenomenal. I can't wait to see how this handles. If this makes it to the mass-produced stage, I think I should cut back on buying food for the next 5 years :lol:

OMG! This is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen! Epic puzzle, and awesome job designing it too - the shape looks quite nice and I don't see a lot of gaps between individual pieces.

We thought the 6x6x6 was huge. Now we have a cube twice that size... in 2 years. :lol:

At that pace we'll hit 34 layers by 2020 :shock: :o

@MeMyselfAndPi

This version is just for test, not for sell. It works properly though a bit tight.

A better version is in progress, but it's much harder to make(MU-59, you can see some part of it in half transparent color in the third picture). I'll make some of them available to serious collectors.

Currently the mechanism won't see the day of light unless the patent file is granted. But I'm considering cancelling the application. Laws as you know, seems always broken anywhere in the world. However, I'll keep it available to serious requests.

If someone wants it really badly, just give me your preferred size together with a generous offer.:) The number of layers practically available is ranged between 6~20.

@sokoban
In my consideration, TP is more oriented at puzzle making. I think cube lovers like you won't miss that info in any case, right?

Luckily it does not use the v mechanism cuz is this not mass produce we will not be able a Verdes produce 12x12.

sounds like a possible verdes competitor, if ever seriously produced.
Wether that is good or bad is anyone's guess...

Verdes would not produce the 12x12x12. His patent only goes up to the 11x11x11. I wouldn't hold my breath even for that. I'll settle for V-Cubes producing.....well, anything else at this point. :wink:

This puzzle is absolutely amazing! I can't wait to see a solid colored and stickered version. It will really seem like a beast then. It's hard to take it in that this puzzle actually exists.

Well Billy... I mean making a working cube of more than 20 layers can be very costy(perhaps tens of thousands of dollars as well as a huge amount of labor) which is impractical.

Beautiful. I'm crossing my fingers hoping this will be produced in some quantity and will be available for purchase.

@sokoban
In my consideration, TP is more oriented at puzzle making. I think cube lovers like you won't miss that info in any case, right?

Leslie

Sweet Jesus! So if we were to request 8x8s or 9x9s, how much may that be, minimum? :D

Looking at that scrambled, I think my heart skipped a beat. (Or two...)

And I prefer black puzzles over white. :shock:

Truly a monumental feat. Amazing job!

Thank you for all your generous encouragements!

Frankly, I'm not planning to solve it though I do have a plan to make a new, better version. This time will be available to collectors.

The stickers were all hand cut and pasted. Next time they'll be machine cut and rounded of course.

Cubes less than 12 layers are in progress, they'll all be available to collectors/speed cubers, but customized only.

It turns smooth if layers are visually aligned(I mean, no more than 2mm displacement, the facelet size is 6.7x6.7). I won't give too much tolerance for displacement, you'll probably figure out the reasons behind it. :D

Now I have updated the video links in the original post.

Enjoy!

Leslie
