Wow, magnets are the new ball bearings!

Really, this looks like Scott's idea was great. Constant enforcement of alignment even after overshooting seems to make the puzzle overall more stable.

Cool.

Great work Drew! That thing looks amazing! I can't wait to see the next version, I think it is going to be even better.

What strength were the magnets?

That's brilliant! Finally, the super-x won't be falling apart each solve! :D

The magnets definitely help the Dino portion of the puzzle, but what about the 2x2x2? It seems to be a bit stiff when turned like a 2x2x2. I would image that the pull of the magnets is just enough to make that movement more of a problem. Did you try it without the magnets first...just to test the movement before hand?

It does look incredible, though. I would love to own one of these one day.

if there were no magnets on the 2x2 turns then the puzzle would turn exactly like the v2.0, there would still be misalignment and squishy-ness the second the dino turn broke from the magnetic release.

I've thought about using magnets for some puzzles a while ago to help keep from going out of alignment, but I wondering what would happen if you you scramble it up and all of a sudden the magnets with the same pole meet and they repel ?

that does not happen with the super X

with a jumble-able puzzle however, possibly

Fantastic!
I have a Super-X of the first generation and it is really not a big fun plaing with it. Do you plan to create a smaller series of your version?

I addressed that issue in a conjectured design by putting magnets only on the core, and attaching screws to the outer pieces where I wanted a magnetic 'stop'. There's no polarity issue because the magnets on the core would always attract the screws on the moving parts; magnets never meet magnets. (I haven't built that puzzle, but I still hope to.)

Obviously my approach wouldn't be suitable for the Super-X because none of the stops are connected to the core.

For anyone wanting to experiment with magnets, I recommend the MagCraft brand sold by Rare-Earth-Magnets.com. They sell disc and rod magnets as small as 1/8-inch (~3mm), and they're as cheap as $9 per hundred (depending on size).

The first one is my favorite. Did you use Alumilite with different colored dyes to cast Adam's design?

Another amazing improvment to an already amazing puzzle by drew and scott.

PS. Drew, you should take another picture of your puzzle collection for your signature, you have so many nice puzzles that aren't in there :)

The Super X is one of my favorite puzzles, and it's great to see a stable version of it!

I love it. Not only do I love it, I love the way you keep improving on designs that already look fantastic. Well done.

Is it possible to upgrade a V1 Super-X with magnets without problems or are differently casted/printed pieces necessary for this?

you would have to be 100% precise in the holes you drill. if you want to know what i think you're best off at printing pieces with all the holes in place.

Or purchase a copy from me if I sell them in the future =)

@Taylor/Drew:
My Super-X is the original prototype, so it's fully 3D-printed and solid.
I could be used to drill holes in the pieces for optimisation.
My preferred magnet sellers - they are both really reliable!! - are :

http://stores.shop.ebay.com/3711s-Magne ... QQ_armrsZ1
http://www.supermagnete.de (have a look at their cool pics and videos!!)

Usually I might appear as a lazy puzzle friend, who lets all the others do the work, but believe me, it is really not a question of interest but time for me. Drilling exact holes into puzzle pieces is not a challenge. It is more relevant to know the exact size and magnetic power of the magnets to use the optimal formats.

Frank,

Your SuperX is a version 2.0, and is printed in sparse fill. Drilling out the parts will not be successful, and will most likely result in ruining the puzzle.

(There are other options available, so send me an e-mail.)

Allright.
The small internal tetrahedrons upon the axes are sparse indeed. The weight of the other pieces suggests, that they might be made already made as sparse pieces. I sent you an email as you proposed.

Might be, that Drew's suggestion is still the best option, even it is means, that the financial effort in the Super-X V2 was a loss.

Frank

Excellent, amazing, wonderful work once again Drew. Making great things better, as always.

You mentioned a newer version of this magnetic super x that is in the works. What are you planning on changing? How will you make it better?

I'm very curious, and I hope it isn't top secret.
