Made from a keyring-sized Eastsheen 2x2x2.

I had the idea after seeing the packaging that my fused keychain cubes arrived in.
After searching the forums, I think it's a 2x2x2 version of a Hex Prism #1.

The inside surfaces are a bit rough and due to this, movement is a little stiff - I need to sort this out sometime.

It's quite tricky and confusing to solve with the mech embedded at this skewed angle, which is a good thing of course :)

Yes, you're right. I've just re-read that post you linked to. When I originally read it, I was looking at the wrong Hex Prism

Easily the best 2x2x2 transformation I've seen. Wish I had thought of it.

And I was going to say it is very pretty. I guess you don't want to hear that now  Seriously though, I love where the inspiration for that came from. I can't tell you how many of those tubes I have laying around and the thought of a puzzle looking like that never crossed my mind. Creative genius at work!

Lovely!

I have a real soft spot for hex prism shape mods! Looks so cool on the 2x2.

Great stuff. Really tidy execution!

Really cool idea. I had to do some serious mind twisting to understand how that was a 2x2, but the scrambled picture helped to visualize it.

Good work, Justin!

Wow. Amazingly beautiful puzzle Justin! There aren't enough 2x2 transformations out there, but I think this definitely makes up for it.

It´s cool how you came up with the idea because of the box :D . You really have developed a style by making really small, really clean and really cool puzzles.

You know, if you hadn't mentioned that it was a 2x2x2, I would have instantly thought skewb. This is a very pleasing transformation, I love how the 2x2x2 slices line up with the various geometrical features of the hex prism, like corners and midpoints! :D

Just as there are different 3x3x3 Hex Prisms, you can upsize this one too and get different patterns.
Here's a *very* rough sketch of the next size up - IMO a 'prettier' pattern than the current sized one :)

It's easy to visualise if you imagine a 2x2x2 hexagonal dipyramid with the top and bottom cut off and the sides built out.
I didn't make it because I thought there would be too much piled on the little mech.
There is another version which is bigger still, with 'V' shaped cuts around the sides, but that's just getting silly.

Perfect transform of twisty puzzles. Congratulations!

One of KPG member(twisty.sayasala) had worked on a similar design for over two months, didn’t have a good result.
I especially like the section lines on the surface of Hex Box.
I wonder how you preview the the section lines on the surface of your design?

Nice design and perfect execution!

Normaly I respond when I have a question, but this downright deserves a bravo! This is the first 2x2 mod I have seen that realy pushes it. If I would have merely seen the picture, It have been looking for hours before realizing it was a 2x2!

Did you use sheet? Any build notes?

I bought a keychain set (single, double, triple and quadruple) for 10GBP which is a bargain IMO and used all the corner shells to make a 'skeleton' in a similar way to 'cut and paste'.
I plated the skeleton with 1mm styrene sheet and filled in any visible lines on the inner surfaces with Milliput and sanded flat.
Edges were bevelled with a needle file and sanded.
I then wet sanded everything.
I inked out the inner surfaces to make them jet black and finally, I stickered it.

Next time I do something, I'll try to remember taking lots of photos!

KPG-john wrote:

I make some sketches of the original shape with the final shape next to it, then imagine the final shape 'cloaking' the original shape with the cuts projecting outward - not very high tech :)
