At the Dutch Cube Day, Anthony Greenhill showed me a sample of a puzzle which he in fact made already several years ago.

The puzzle is called Diogenes.
It is mentioned by David Singmaster in his Cubic Circular number 2 on page 16.
According to David, it was invented or proposed by Hubert Petutschnig who also invented the Logi-VIP ball.

David describes the Diogenes as follows:
“It is a 3 by 10 cylinder with no blank space. Instead half the cylinder slides back and forth into three positions. Thus the middle half-ring on one side may get matched with any half-ring on the other side”.

Anthony Greenhill made the puzzle out of an ordinary ‘barrel’ having 3 levels of 6 positions and one empty position.
The mechanism which Anthony designed and made is very precise.
I hope that Anthony will explain a bit more details on how he was able to construct it.

I believe that it is a beautiful, very elegant puzzle and beautifully made.
I also suspect that, although it was mentioned once as a possible idea by others, it is probably a puzzle of which the first actual sample was made by Anthony Greenhill.

Yeah, i would definately be interested in purchasing. Reminds me of a cross between the Nintendo Billion Barrel (I thik that's the name) and a Whip It.

Is it possible to remove the pieces, or is there some mechanism preventing this?

If you look closely, it appreas that the top / bottom caps prevent the pieces from being removed. Otherwise, I'd say it wouldn't be much of a puzzle

It looks like the end caps prevent the pieces from falling out. That is, providing it won't move any further than it's shown in the photo.

i have an idea on how it might work, but what allows shifting up and down, but prevents sliding up or down by two?

Beautiful puzzle. Well not new, but perhaps new to us, so I'll move it.

It's a different type of puzzle mod than one would expect from Mr. Greenhill. Still very interesting.

I have only seen a couple of Anthony's puzzles in person, and they are some of the highest quality custom puzzles I have ever seen. Excellent work once again!

The Russian Flower is actually a mass produced puzzle. I picked on up off of ebay for $40 last year. I also believe OLIDJUS is a mass produced, but much rarer puzzle (Along the lines of a Chi Gung ball). Both of those were copies of pre-existing puzzles. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is a new design (well, 'newly' made).

I must say thanks for posting OLIDJUS link. I haven't seen that thread in a while and I've always loved the beauty of that puzzle.

I WANT IT! I love barrel puzzles like the whip-it, and this awesome. Of course, I've never seen an Anthony Greenhill puzzle that wasn't.
