That's pretty cool. Is this a first mod for the 6x6x6? Are those tips in any way functional? I have a real soft spot for this shape. It was the first shape I tried to mod with some cheap 3x3x3 cubes and made a huge mess.
I have to say.... pretty quick work.... cubes arrive at 10.00am (ish is that right?) mod complete and posted by 9pm ???????!!!!
Two records in one!

I don't know with this one. Tony has been known to stretch the truth on occasion, but then again he's also been known to produce brilliant puzzles. I think this is legitimate though, well done Tony!

I was talking with somebody about modding the v-cubes the other day. We agreed that you would be the first to come out with a mod

Doesn't seem likely to be real, mostly for logistical reasons. But I suppose anything is possible.
It would, however, be possible to turn his recent 333+extended on all 6 faces puzzle into this one without too much drama...
Either way, very nice!

Of course it's real. I just assume Tony was able to get a V-Cube 6 sooner than most of us. Perhaps he simply asked Panagiotis Verdes if he could have one in advance to modify. Or this is an old prototype someone decided to part with. Besides, Tony knows we'll kick his ass if he ever pulls another stunt. edit: I'm now guessing Tony was able to borrow a V-Cube 6 from someone. And after taking exact measurements he could have molded and casted all the pieces he needed. Paint it, sticker it and than simply wait for a new V-Cube 6 to arrive so he could use the spindle. But then he could have assembled it previously, on the other V-Cube. I'm sure he would have posted pictures of that. Hmmm... Tony, please explain. Thomas

Waw Tony! Very well made! It was probably very difficult to add 2 fully functional layer on all sides!

It can't be finished yet. Rhombic dodecahedrons cant stand on a point as shown in the first pic.

Tony Fisher wrote: It works but maybe I should have broken in the 6x6x6 a little more. The combination of the 6x6x6 and slightly big parts makes it a bit difficult to turn. If I'm interpreting this rightly, you think it would be less difficult to turn if the 6x6x6 had been broken in first but it would still be somewhat awkward due to its size. Right? Just trying to get a 'feel' for how much of it is an unavoidable consequence of the shape and size. I imagine it takes a little fiddling just to figure out how to hold it without misaligning all those layers!

It would be awesome to see a family portrait of 2x2 - 6x6 of Rhombic Dodecahedrons.
Eventually, Maybe a 7x7 too.

Who'll be the first with a Crystal Pyraminx mod?
I've never really understood rhombic dodecahedrons till I saw the build pics.

Very cool. If you were to make a 7x7x7, wouldn't it be kind of tricky to get extensions to stay on the pillowed surface? It would have to be very exact.

Well, here's how I could see a Rhombic Dodecahedron 7x7 going about.
You would have to sand down each cubie so the face is entirely flat, getting rid of any curvature. Then you would have to hand sand the base of the extension pieces to match the angle. From there you would have to level all of the exterior surfaces.

Yes a 7x7x7 would be trickier. Cutting the edges to 45 degrees and adding pyramids to the faces wouldn't work. The curvature means that the 12 edge cuts would go into pieces other than just edge pieces. Plus the 7x7x7 has hollow parts and of cause you are building onto 6 x 25 curved 'centre' pieces. Without going into details you would use the curved surface to make the pieces rather than try and make something that fits onto it. If it wasn't for Cube Day rapidly approaching I might well make one but I simply don't have the time at the moment.

amazing video! VIDEO! p.s. for the pillowed surface couldn't you get a cubie and put putty on the bottom, then press onto pillowed surface for a mold posotive ( extending that is)

I am speechless, this is just unbeliveable. When I saw the pictures I thought that Tony must have had a 6x6x6 and modded it long ago, and posting it now. But this just shows how dedicated Tony are to modifying a twisty puzzle. A beautiful puzzle, very good job!!!

I was meaning to reply to this thread for ages. This is another fantastic proof of a work of a genius! I totally believe that Tony is one amazing puzzle builder who reached the level, when he can start building puzzle without actually having one! It's like Jaap writing solution without taking puzzle out of it's packeging! Tony, you are a master of masters! There's no denying about that! Those people who thought he had to borrow 6x6x6 to make this puzzle are wrong! He only needed to obtain parts/cube measurements from those people who already had one, that's all. Absolutely amazing Tony. Well done! I don't think I can ever reach such level though! Vadim
