Slice Kilominx by OSKAR and BRAM

Hi Twisty Puzzle fans,

Slice Kilominx is an idea by Bram Cohen, designed, developed and prototyped by me.

As you may know, there exist several versions of Kilominx, including

The original Impossible Dodecahedron by Thomas (with gaps)
Kilominx by David Litwin (flower-style)
Kilominx by myself (cadded water-tight)

Bram Cohen came up with the idea of the Slice Kilominx. His idea is that all opposite faces turn as if they were connected. Bram explained to me in detail how to design this puzzle, using the Jaap's Sphere tool by Jaap Scherphuis. With the coordinates by Bram on Jaap's Sphere, I could make a shells-type design and I built the puzzle. The puzzle turns rather stiff. I think this is caused by the roughness of the nylon SLS 3D print in combination with intrinsic properties of this design. After a lot of turning, it got quite a bit looser. It is a fully functional puzzle, which is very confusing and hence quite hard to solve.

Mr Van Deventer, you are an icon among these forums and you and Mr Cohen seem to defy the laws of science and mathematics with your puzzles. This is another example of exactly that. This is fantastic!
Reminds me of your Geary cube, but more stiff :lol:

I have always wondered if you lube your puzzles? Do you add in extra tollerence in the design for the sls? Do you do anything to the printed pieces before you stick them into the puzzle? Thanks, Tanner.

I have not had the pleasure of playing with one of these (though Oskar had many other great designs at IPP), but I will say that I quite enjoyed staring at the mechanism on the Shapeways page until I could grok how it worked.

Edit -- oh, the mechanism shot has been removed? Too bad!

Yay, Oskar's here!

I love the concept for this one, personally. It's interesting to note that opposite pairs of pieces will always stay the same in relation to each other, so all you have to worry about in the long run is one of every pair.

This makes me wonder... is an actual Geary Minx possible? I'm guessing not in the same way...

These are the sorts of puzzles that got me into cubing, this reminds me of the geary cube, but in a dodecahedron form, and no gears :lol:
