Good puzzles to collect

I am currently looking to expand my collection (which is 60 at last count) and I am wondering about what puzzles I should add, so if you answer the questions bellow, I might get some ideas.

1. What is the hardest puzzle...
At any price?
Under 50$?
Under 25$?

2. If you could keep just one puzzle in your collection, what would it be?

3. What would you consider the rarest puzzle ever?

4. How many puzzles do you think a good collection should have?

There have been so many topics like this one that I'd suggest you go read those.

Since you did ask a few less common questions I'll answer those.

I think the hardest puzzle to physically solve is probably TomZ's Multidodecahedron, Greg's version of Gelatinbrain's 3.3.5 (deceth or something like that) or Drew's Quad-X. For hard mass produced puzzles, probably the face turning Starminx or the Crazy 4x4x4 II.

The hardest under $25 is probably the Eastsheen 4x4x4 with super stickers (provided you try to find a solution yourself) or possibly TomZ's Curvy Copter (with jumbling).

A good collection should have as many puzzles as you can reasonably afford.

As for rarity, there are several printed puzzles with only one copy in existence. There are a number of puzzles that have a huge demand to supply ratio (Dogic for example).

I was thinking people would just say 17x17 or something like that. That puzzle would be the end of me.

I agree totally with dogics. I hope they start reproducing them.

If you can solve a 7x7x7 then you can solve a 17x17x17, it will just take more time.

As for hardest puzzles, I think when you start to get into bandaging of some kind you start to increase the challenge.

You can have ridiculously hard puzzles, that will not be as enjoyable to solve. It really depends what you mean.. like the Uranus Tetrahedron was quite a difficult challenge, but it would not be in my `oh great let’s grab it out and solve it tonight` list, because I would have to refer to a list of very long sequences. Or you can have hard puzzles that are more fun to solve, like the Bermudas, or some of the other crazy circle series.

It is known that I am a fan of crazy circle puzzles, I would keep one of the more difficult crazy megaminx, probably Mars (or Neptune which is harder), but I love Mars though.

I would make sure you have a variety of challenges, some Crazy planets, some Bermudas, some bandaged cubes, some higher order puzzles, a variety of axes, some jumbling, some shapeshifting etc. TomZ’s curvy copter is awesome, and the Master Skewb, the Witeden Super 3x3x3 is good, Ayi’s 4x4x5, try the Latch Cube or Fuse Cube, so many rate a mention.

But some of my favourites are ones that I have modded myself or shapeways puzzles, like I have Mike’s Mini Mixup and David Pitcher’s Fracture6 and TomZ’s Multidodecahedron and they are on the top of my like list.

Only buy rare puzzles if they are interesting to look at or solve, don’t just buy them because they're rare.

Make sure you have a bit of a look at the relevant threads to see what puzzles you think you might prefer of the series type puzzles like Bermudas and Crazy Planets.. some are quite easy and some are very difficult, and sometimes `more bandaging` can be `easier` so a quick scan for peoples difficulty ratings and the reasons why might be worthwhile.

Good 4×4×5, but drewseph's starminx II is a edge turning puzzle. Searched shapeways but didn't find anything.

Starminx II is not mass produced. I don't believe that there is any way to obtain one.

Other puzzles that may interest you would be the Flowerminx, or Master Polymorphinx.

I think it's just another misunderstanding because of mf8's naming scheme, RubiksMaster614 probably means the mf8 face-turning puzzle.

Also, one of the hardest puzzles for me to solve was the witeden super 3x3x3. I'm not sure if everyone else finds it challenging, but I think it's one of the more challenging ones that you could get for under $25.

By the way, is their any way to buy any other of drewseph's puzzles besides the mini gigaminx? All his puzzles look amazing, especialy the master brilic, starminx II, and elite skewb.
