I recently won the mach ball flags below: Attachment:

My question is: Does anyway know the history of why these countries flags were chosen for the ball? Was it released to commemorate something, or was it just a random selection of flags? Thanks for any help!

I thought that it may be something to do with the European Union countries, but that green & white flag near the bottom is not in the EU. In fact, I can't match it to any country's flag. Anybody recognize this one?

I see now that it is a green E, but this flag was never officially adopted by the EU (the ring of stars flag was adopted in 1995). Using the green E flag is quite a political statement - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federalist_flag. The other flags which are visible are Italy, Ireland, Denmark, Greece, Belgium, Germany, United Kingdom, France and Luxembourg. These are all EU countries of course, but I have no idea why the puzzle was produced.

I would say those flags are the members or the EU (resp. the predecessing bodies) between 1981 (accession of Greece) and 1986 (acession of spain and portugal). The federalist flag was included because one slot would have been empty.

Thanks everybody I did suspect it was related to Europe but that green and white flag really threw me - i hadn't noticed the "E" on it either. I guess you live and learn! Thanks for your help!

Damn, you have spoiled everything I imagined it was something to do with a secret political/financial society who were determined to destroy the Eurozone for further their desires of World Domination. But that could never happen ...
