I thought some of you guys might appreciate this. Somewhere around middle school and into high school, I started making various polyhedra out of paper. I got kind of obsessed with it for a while but I haven't really done much with it lately. Anyways, I took a few pictures of my collection (most of it) around last year:

I have a lot more close-ups somewhere but I can't remember where they are right now. Anyways, just thought I'd share. What do you think?

Very nice ... that's a lot of paper and patience to go through. Good for long car trips when you're not driving

What books did you find them in? I'm pretty sure I have one of them, or at least something similar.

A good number of the models come from the various books written by Japanese author Tomoko Fuse. She is one of the authorities on modular origami polyhedra as well as other sorts of things like box origami (you can see those at the very front of the picture). Others come from trying to imitate what I have seen on other websites or just from attempting to build a model of some of the various uniform polyhedra/duals. And I have actually made quite a few while in a back seat of a car...



Although most came from Fuse's book, some of the bigger ones are variations on her patterns. Once you can make a basic unit, adding an extra crease in various places can transform the look of the unit significantly and change the resulting pattern. Also, she provides the units and the instructions for a basic shape such a stellated hexahedron, and I used the units to make something bigger, such as a stellated icosidodecahedron. Some of the larger shapes are not so structurally sound and tend to collapse in on themselves over time.


I'm not sure quite which one you are referring to. If you could try to point it out in the second picture where it's easier to see everything, I could tell you what it is.

I believe he is referring to far right second from bottom. Very nice. I too do some origami.

Oh, that one is just a regular old icosahedron. The only difference is that it's more of a shell pattern since all the triangles are hallowed out (it other words each unit is an edge, the faces are removed).

What kind of stuff have you made?

Yeah they are pretty fragile. Most of them are in a plastic bag at the top of my closest but the rest are in a display shelf in my room. This is the best picture I have of it...it's my facebook profile picture; you get to see me and my guitar too haha:

Oh, not much, some non-modular stuff, including some animals, and some Kawasaki roses (original, not new version). Some modular stuff, but only some basic variations on the sonobu unit and other basic units.
