I got my Rubik's Dice in the mail yesterday. I've figured out how to solve it and I've notived small dots, perhaps 1mm in diameter. Are these supposed to be white too for it to be considered solved, or are those optional and just there for an extra challenge. They seem to demand orientation of the metal plates.

Yes they do.
If you count them in for the solution there is only one, but if you don't care for thier colours there is acouple more.
