Shapeways is offering $50 off orders of $200.
Does anyone know if it works twice?

It doesn't look like it:

I presume he means for 5 different $200 orders, each of which I'm sure would eb valid $200 orders

What a silly offer/promotion in terms of economics and incentives, as it would be better to split one order of $400 into 2 orders of $200 each, even though it would require shipping 2 separate parcels instead of one!

Bad timing for me!!!
I have just spent a fortune on other puzzles (non-twisty) and really can't afford the wrath of Mrs S if I buy more! She won't appreciate dry bread and water for Xmas dinner!

I was looking at Eric Virgo's Rex Skewb, the Edge turning Octahedran by Eitan or the Dino Skewb by TomZ or Ben's Curvy Copter Skewb! Help!!

Probably just as well that I have run out of money - I think any of these puzzles might just kill me!

Hi Kelvin,

I agree with you. But it creates also interesting knapsack problems. Today, I placed an order with Shapeways for $1011.44 (ex-VAT, ex-shipping). I managed to get the full discount by splitting my order into five $200+ batches to get the maximum 5x$50=$250 discount. How did I do that?

Here are the models that I ordered.
Model 01: $7.05
Model 02: $35.19
Model 03: $48.76
Model 04: $49.93
Model 05: $56.69
Model 06: $59.06
Model 07: $61.31
Model 08: $61.65
Model 09: $62.14
Model 10: $64.53
Model 11: $65.02
Model 12: $71.20
Model 13: $71.23
Model 14: $72.82
Model 15: $72.96
Model 16: $73.85
Model 17: $78.05
------------ +
Total: $1 011.44

How to divide these 17 models over 5 knapsacks, such that each knapsack is worth more than $200?

Bonus question: what was my actual discount percentage?
-The discount does not include the VAT, whereas the VAT is 20% for my country, Netherlands.
-The discount does not include shipping. The cost per shipment is $6.50 including VAT.

Enjoy!

Oskar

Is that your next puzzle?

Look what the UPS brought me, five parcels deliveries in five consecutive days. I asked Shapeways about the (non)logic of their discount system, as they could have saved the cost of four shipping on this order. This is their response.
Shapeways wrote:
Thank you for your note! As you probably remember from all the years past, this is the first year we have done multiple promotions, rather than one day of a fixed % sale, or no discounts at all. To answer some of your questions:

Most discounts have limits, and the five-use limit comes from the five days that the sale was live, thereby allowing someone to potentially shop each day and save. For comparison, a lot of promotions allow a one-time use only.

We work hard to bring all of our community the lowest prices all year round, even lowering pricing on ceramics last month! This year, we want to use promotions as a way to encourage new shoppers to try out Shapeways, and bring customers for all of our Shop Owners, like yourself. The multi-level promotion let us reward both new users and large buyers as well.

I know for an especially large buyer like yourself, one 20% discount would be much easier for a bulk order, but for this sale, we really wanted to encourage people to try Shapeways, and realize its not just a place for impulse buys on one day of the year, but an amazing marketplace full of unique products where they can continue shopping.

I hope that helps explain it, and while I can appreciate the complexity of the knapsack problem we created for you, I know your puzzling mind is the best one to solve it!

I hope you have a prosperous holiday season!
So it is all about marketing. That is the same non-logic why return flights by air are cheaper than one-way flights, and why more-fuel-burning routes are cheaper than less-full-burning flights. I am curious how long its will take Shapeways to come up with a discount system that is more complicated than my mobile-phone plan ...

Hilarious, this is why people who can't do math end up in marketing!

I think the best way to solve this problem, is to write the price of the puzzles on 17 cards, then make 5 groups with each 3 or 4 cards, and swap the cards until the total of every group is more than $200. Or maybe it is easier to make 17 strips of paper that have same the lenght in centimeter as the prices of the puzzles and make rows of more than 2 meter with them.

Yes, I also ended up with nine orders..
Unfortunately this means, I've to pay the S&H costs for each order, which reduces the overall-benefit.
I think, it would be better for Shapeways and for the customers to offer a kind of linear discount because
also for them it means, that they have more effort and costs with all the additional parcels. Yesterday
I received a huge Shapeways box with just one bag of puzzle pieces and a lot of additional packaging
material inside. Pure nonsense. One package with all puzzles would do well, of course.
But I guess, it's their way of discouraging customers to order more in different orders and multiple discounts
and have the trouble with all the arriving parcels over many days. (This year) their web frontend is not
able to find out, that it is the same customer ordering over and over again.

Pictures next week..
