My edges only void cube is infected with some sort of parasite. I'm not sure what it is, or what I should do about it.... I thought if I left it separated from the rest of my puzzles awhile the parasite would die. It didn't. It multiplied.

What should I do? There are now several colonies embedded in the inner mechanism of the puzzle.

wow! You need to contact the company that sold you that and ask for a refund/replacement! Good thing you noticed it and you whole collection didnt get infected...

I wonder what the parasite lives off of...

well I think some alcohol would kill them.

Nuke 'em with water! Or try asking nicely for them to get off...

Perhaps the parasites are feeding off of some lubricant that is on the puzzle? :?:

EDIT: actually, rubbing alcohol isn't such a bad idea.

I've got a plan!

Plan A:
1. disassemble your puzzle. If you have one of the spray faucets, the kind that is on the side of the sink that you can pick up and is attached to a tube (hopefully you know what I'm talking about), spray the whole puzzle (stickers might get damaged.

2. Once you're done spraying them, dunk them in a sink or bucket (something with a LOT of volume) filledwater and leave them overnight or as long as it takes for all of them to die. (you might be able to tell if they're dead if they float to the top of the water.

3. If this doesn't work then we will go with plan B

Plan B:

1. Get on disposable plastic gloves and roll you sleeves up

2. Rub off all the parasites be sure not to get any on your skin or clothes (have a fresh pair nearby and hand wash the ones you were wearing)

Plan C:

Rubbing alcohol

CHECK FOR HOLES IF THESE THREE PLANS WORK!! THE PARASITES MIGHT HAVE LITERALLY DUG INTO THE CUBE!! IF SO, RESORT TO PLAN D!!!

Plan D:

Get a new cube

Are you sure it's a parasite? looks like cockroach droppings...

I had something that looked like that on some of my plants. We had to burn all of them and start anew. Bad bugs those were.

Maybe it is the lubricant that came on it?

@katsmom No. You can see them moving. It's like watching paint dry, but still.

Take some silicone spray and burn them to death.

I'd put that under a microscope. You should figure out if it is a small insect, bacteria, droppings from an insect, mineral buildup, fungus, etc.

You can get one for less than $40:

If I recall correctly you live in San Diego. I do too (Mira Mesa). I'm not sure if I have access to any labs this week but if I do, I have a friend who would love to help. She's really into this sort of thing and has access to a state-of-the-art medical research lab. PM me if you're interested in doing a bit of scientific investigation tomorrow or Thursday.

I'd say drop the whole thing in rubbing alcohol for a few minutes. Though since that is a KO the alcohol might actually cost you more than just buying a new cube

Maybe those things feed off of turning the puzzle. Or maybe NOT turning it? If the latter is the case you should figure out for sure quickly and scramble them to death with some gloves on.

OR you just wait for new year. I know that in America you guys selebrate independence day with fire crackers rather than new year. But there must be some crackers available at this time of the year too. Just make sure you buy a whole load of them so the parasite would not blast into the atmosphere and survive to haunt all our collections but to completely evaporise everything. You will need a setup that has the puzzle in the center.
Although I have another idea right now: Maybe those parasites only settle in KO puzzles? Like someone made a puzzle virus that kills only this certain type?
That'd be cool.

NO seriously: This looks bad. I would contact the seller as well and in addition... disassemble and use that alcohol method.

I would just throw it away. That is really gross and the puzzle isn't worth much anyway. I mean, you wouldn't try to clean a moldy loaf of bread, would you?

There may be some type of gunk (fecal matter or some other type of equally nasty organic residue) stuck inside one of the pieces. I cannot imagine parasites eating something that is completely synthetic or non-bio-degradable. It's also possible they may be eating lubricant. Suppose they used cooking oil or something edible to lubricate the puzzle. Cooking oil is undoubtedly cheaper than Silicone, and does make a good lubricant. It does work. We used to use bun oil to lubricate the blades of the tomato slicer when I worked in fast food. The bugs may be eating that.

If you are really brave, you can try sniffing the puzzle, just don't get your face too close. If it smells rancid or "pooey", then there is definitely some type of residual debris on the puzzle that the parasites are eating. Douse it in 70% rubbing alcohol to kill them and disinfect it. I would take up the "lab analysis" offer if I were you as well. They should still be able to identify the specimen even if it's dead.

Finally, please also be aware that this KO may have originated from the cruddiest of all the KO companies, who perhaps have no concept of personal safety or hygiene, either for their employees or customers. It is also likely, if you received it from eBay or some other secondhand seller, that they were probably not even aware of the problem themselves when they received it/shipped it.
