Hey Puzzlers!

As someone who builds and sells puzzles, it is always good to know what the customers want. On that note, I would like to know:

Do you prefer your puzzles out of black or white PLASTIC?

I'm sure a lot of people would like to know this.

For me, it depends on the puzzle. In my opinion, some puzzles look better in white, and some look better in black. For WSF printed pieces, I usually prefer the parts to be dyed black, as they tend to get dirty if they are left white.

Hi,

Jim H Kim asked the same question about 600 days ago on this topic and the results were: Black = 64% and White = 36%

I agree with wil_57, it depends on the puzzle. But looking at my collection, I think I prefer black. Then again, maybe it is because some of the older puzzles where only available in black.

On the other hand, I'm really enjoying my new color DaYan GuHong.

I prefer white plastic simply because I love the slick look of the black stickers.

Black all the way! Any white puzzle I've had has either been tossed to the wayside, or replaced by a black one. :P

Call me old fashioned, but black is best. if only white is available, I'll take it though. I won't hold out just because of color.

I learned an interesting fact about custom puzzles from China. White is the color of choice because black isn't available in ABS (or is that PVC?) whichever, it's necessity, not preference.

I'll have either option, as long as the white has black stickers. But I'm more on the whiter side

The reason why I love black puzzles is because you can't see the oils left by your hands also sun bleach and I'm old fashion plus i hate change.

Black puzzles. When it comes to speedcubing, there are very few people who use all white speedcubes. Also, in a collection, stickers on a black puzzle are a lot more noticable.

Black all the way. If it's not black it might as well be pink, blue, or purple. Makes no difference.

Black all the way!! anyday! only time I liked white was when the vcubes came out. They had a unique look to them. but when they came in black, then I got rid of my white set.

For Cubic puzzles, usually black. My whole collection ranges from 1 to 6 is black. I also got two V7s (one white, one black) and I did a chessboard mod. This was long before Verdes released his rather lame ILLusion V7.

Tetrahedrons should be white, though. I guess this was because my mom had a white Pyraminx and a Black Rubik's Cube in the early 80s, which I grew up with. The original white Meffert Pyraminx still survives to this day, stickers intact. My Shim's Master Pyraminx is also white with florescent Cubesmith stickers to match it's much older brother. Sometimes when Meffert releases a new puzzle in black/white variants, my choice of which to buy is basically dictated by the type of mood I am in. For example, I got the black Diamond and Skewb Cube, with a white Ultimate.

I have two Helicopter Cubes, jumbled the white one but not the black. I also got two Gear Cubes, gave both of them Fisher-style stickers, and kept the black one as-is while I modded the white one into an Anisotropic Cube with Oskar's Shapeways kit.

Well, I actually like blue, but if I had to choose between
white and black, I wouldn't mind any of them!

I only have a few white puzzles in my collection. I really try to avoid buying white. I feel that I got suckered into buying a set of white V-Cubes because when they first came out because that was all that was available. The black ones didn’t come out until months later. Also, I tend to quickly overlook some nice custom puzzles if they are white (and/or unnecessarily pillowed).

I used to prefer black and only bought black puzzles. Recently I've found myself choosing white puzzles normally. I still normally mod with black puzzles though (although my next few mods will have 3 white out of 4 cubes).

I prefer black, but some of my custom puuzles have been offered as white only. Looking at the bubbling stickers on my casted puzzles, I see that black puzzles are worse by far.
Is that a common experience or is it specific to the ones I have?

Some people consider the fully coloured plastic "cheap". I'm pretty sure, if the original Rubik's Cube would have looked this way, erverybody would call black body with stickers "cheap" copies. :)

haha you have a point there Konrad! I used to wish for a color plastic 3x3x3. But that was before I found the vinyl stickers.
Today black plastic is chosen, because of the looks. Its really personal preference, but here is my reason: I like the borders. The black lines shows the cuts of the puzzle clearly! On white puzzles those lines does not stand out in the same way in contrast to the color stickers. If I wanted a white puzzle, it would be the Ghost Cube, with black stickers on there only.

+ I just love the white sticker face! Just my favourite side if I had to choose :p

Like others have said before, I believe that it depends on the puzzle. I do tend to like white puzzles with black stickers as they look cool. With me, it seems to be that I like higher order puzzles puzzles in white, and lower order in black (but it depends also on the shape). That said, I love the look of my Golden Egg and Golden Cube puzzles even more than black/white puzzles! :D

the Ghost Cube, with black stickers
I think my Ghost Cube is the only white twisty puzzle I want to keep. Truth be told that if a black one with white stickers was available I would have gotten that instead.

I'm considering selling or trading the rest of my white twisty puzzles which includes the above mentioned V-Cubes as well as some custome puzzles.

Black.

With shiny brightly colored stickers, this is the best.

That said, there are some puzzles where white works well: I find the Flowerminx in white preferable because of the visibility of the cutouts. They look very large with black plastic where the cutout blends in with the dark plastic and all you see is the large gap between stickers.

For me it depends on the puzzle. A white 3x3x3 seems strange to me yet my white v-cubes look perfect. With custom puzzles I usually dye them black but a few look better white. Just my two cents :D
