I am organizing a meet up in San Francisco for the evening of Saturday the 8th of August.
Location and exact time are yet to be determined but details will follow.

Unfortunately Aleh is out of town :( but I am guessing I can count on myself, Bram, Jason (io) and Derek Bosch, not to mention a mystery guest or two :)

If you happen to be in the area and can make it, let me know. You won't regret it.

Dave

I know that I add absolutely nothing to the discussion (or any interesting puzzles), but I will probably be able to make it.

Dave, are you thinking Downtown or more of the wharf/presidio?

I don't yet know. Depending on how many plan to show up we might wind up needing a lot or just a little space. I need to figure that part out. I could possibly even move it to Berkeley, but I think SF works better for a number of people.

I am guessing dinner will be involved, so some place near food, but with a quiet room we can occupy for a few hours, preferably with tables. I don't think a restaurant would work (we'd take up too much space and time). For the first SF meet up (way back when...) we met at the Metreon food court, but that was just a few of us and it wasn't private enough.

Games of Berkeley has worked out in the past although it could be a bit cramped. I'm hoping this won't require renting out a room, but that is possible.

Dave

Have you looked at San Francisco's Open Spaces?

I especially like 55 Second Street. Seems the right amount of secluded while being public. Unfortunately most of these places close around 6ish, so that means an early dinner.

PS. Dave, I have confirmed with David Calvo (rastarubik) who will be around
and he is also coming (and maybe with a couple of "Marusenko sphere" guests too).

PS2. We will probably need a place that stays open at least till 9pm.
(there is some other event that ends at 5pm before that)

I would gladly join the "Twisty group". All places are good to me; means to get back to the hotel are the only constraint.

Juozas, I will go back with you as we are staying just across the road! ;)

Rob, it will be an honor to see you again! :)

Drew, I cannot wait to twist some of your puzzles, I wished you were also present! :D

Garrett, I am actually coming because of you!

Taylor, it seems you will meet again your (assembled now) 24-Cube pieces!

This is good, the turnout is already very promising, and it going to be lots of fun!

:)

I'm debating on flying or driving...either way I would have to drag a parent along with me and that might be a problem. Otherwise I'd gladly drive myself up there

EDTI: Just talked to my mom. Shes fine with going :D :D :D

I just checked my calendar and realized a major scheduling conflict, or 15 minutes ago I would have committed to going. I'll have to see if there's a way for me to get approval for this. Long story short, to use a frequently used misquote, "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned."

Not sure why I didn't reply last night, but I'll be sure to make it.
This is the week before Nationals on purpose, I presume?

I can't come  Even ignoring the fact that it's several hours away, my sister is having a bat mitzvah that day. And the day after I'm leaving on vacation. Take lots of pictures, everyone!

Cubicle: Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into them.

Juozas and Rob: Owners of my puzzles are *always* welcome :) And I'm sure we can work out some form of transportation.

Those looking at hotels: Any hotel near SFO airport is probably good, as others will be staying in that area. This might also lead me to choose a location around there.

Jin: We'd love to see you, but don't get yourself in hot water over us...

Drewseph: And the Praxis perhaps? please please please?

Lucas: The timing actually has nothing to do with Nationals, it was to coincide with Pantazis and others being in town. Just coincidence :)

Sorry, having something around Nationals would exclude Pantazis and others, who leave before then :( (Perhaps you will bump into him at the airport...)

Perhaps we can have another meet up that weekend as well :)

joey, David has a good point there. I will be leaving CA at around 2pm at the international terminal.
I could surely come early (11am?) if we could meet.

After brief negotiations looks like I'm back on track to be in SF on the 8th. I'll probably be bringing a mystery guest in tow (most likely not what you may think).

Sorry, I should have planned the meet up sooner :(

I wouldn't want to compete with Dutch Cube Day, but have been meaning to organize a California Cube Day. I think a North American Cube Day is a bit of a large scope but California is pretty nice, and will probably draw a reasonable crowd.

As it happens this SF meet up was going to be the first California Cube Day, but that would conflict a bit with other events (which I didn't want). I suppose perhaps we could call it "California Cube Evening" :)

California Cube Day is something I plan on pursuing in the future (perhaps in the spring) so plan on that if you can't make the 8th.

We need to get a sense of attendance. I am worried we may be beyond camping out at a restaurant for a few hours. I'd rather not have to charge an attendance fee, but if we have a lot of people we will probably have to rent a room and that might mean a bit of a donation per person.

Here is my estimate of attendance at the moment:
EDIT: See here for an updated list

So we are around 30 assuming a few unconfirmed drop out and we pick up a few more.

If there are any planning to attend I haven't caught, PM me and I'll add you to the list.

You forgot about the pentultimate! It will no doubt be in attendance

I'd be OK with giving a small donation to get a meeting area. I surely wouldn't drive 6 hours to hang out in Pantazis's hotel room

DLitwin
Pantazis
Cubicle
Juozas
Rob
Jason Smith (io)
Bram
Derek Bosch
Nick Baxter?
Stan Isaacs?
Garrett and parent
NeoDarkHaven
Jin and Mystery guest...
Lucas Garron
Myke

So assuming we pick up a few more we are up to around 20. Perhaps that would work for a restaurant, but it seems a bit large and I have a feeling we will not want to be rushed.

If there are any planning to attend I haven't caught, PM me and I'll add you to the list. I'm out of town but will be back home soon and can spend a bit more time planning a location.

Worst case? Pantazis room!!!!!

Dave

You forgot David Calvo (confirmed) and probably also his two spanish friends
(who made the Marusenko sphere!). ;)

And I am surely not kidding when I offer my room. I could
even ask the reception to upgrade to Executive Suite for that day!

I have done it before for other puzzle meetings!!!

PS. In the photo, there is a story behind the praying... one of the

I have updated my list with the new additions, and still expect to hear from a few others.

LOL Just search without worrying too much. If there is no solution found
till the day I arrive (and we would probably meet at the "flughafen"),
then we can use my room.

Last time, there were more people in my room than the ones shown
in the photos, and we simply placed some of the puzzles on the bed
and some on the table(s). Sitting on the bed, couches, chairs, or even
the floor (which I like), ensures no one is standing!

And I agree with Garrett, this is going to be some epic meetup!

But I would certainly love it if we could book a classy restaurant or place
(as long as everyone is ok with it - I am only giving extra options!)

:)

Is there a public library of some sort with a community room nearby? I know my local library here in Socal has a pretty decent sized room that you can reserve (I think) for free, as long as you book it early.

Libraries tend to close a bit early, but it doesn't hurt to check. I've just started looking into hotel conference rooms, which may be the most convenient.

Attendence continues to grow...

Wow... this is indeed an impressive meeting!
(I guess I can add a couple more people? LOL)

Other places (than those suggested) that we could meet:

Universities (*especially* Mathematics Departments that have late lectures!)
Greek Restaurants (ok ok I know I am biased on this, but the food is soooo good!)
A relaxing beach! (the weather seems ideal, and it *is* California after all!!!)
Karaoke? (extremely popular in Singapore, but I am not sure in USA).

   (trying to be serious)

Pantazis

PS. A conference room seems to be the best choice though. :)
(which will be needed to combine with dinner)

Greek Restaurants (ok ok I know I am biased on this, but the food is soooo good!)
A relaxing beach! (the weather seems ideal, and it *is* California after all!!!)

Maybe I didn't know where to look...but last few times I've been to San Francisco the beaches are pretty bad. And sand + puzzles = recipe for failure.

Greek restaurants aren't a bad idea, because of their deliciousness, but like Dave said earlier we would take up too much space for too long.

Dunno if I can help you with the long distance question, but I do know that San Francisco is very accessible with public transportation. You could get just about anywhere for a few bucks and walking a few blocks.

Also, before I forget, I can reserve a *very* limited (less than seven each) number
of Cubedrons and Cybedrons for sale or exchange during the meet up.

Let me know if you are interested!

;)
