At first this puzzle looks like a 3x3x3 in shape of a cylinder but it allows only four different turns. The top and bottom layers of the cylinder allow for 90° turns. This also rotates the gears. Two sides may be turned by 180°. The other two sides are blocked from turning by the gears.
The orientation of the gears are made clear by additional markings and thereby included in the solving of the puzzle.
